Seige - I wouldn't say my ID is getting old hat yet - but I am interested in variations in performing it, so I will probably be picking up a brainwave deck at some point.

The awesome 'X' on the sankey dvd also sounds fascinating, before I buy these how would you rate the tricks on the dvds(1 and 2) as far as difficulty goes? would you generally recommend the dvds as value for money?

Also - you mentioned John Kennedy's mindpower deck in a post elsewhere - would you say this was fairly easy to perform?

Thanks

OK, the Sankey's DVDs are a breeze. There's some pretty odd sleights, and you'll need a fair selection of decks and preparation tools.

But they're great!

The Mindpower deck is awesome... very easy to perform. About half an hour to get your head round it is all that's needed.

PM me for any more 'intimate' info about either of these items...

i have 2 agree about the impact and value that the ID holds. I also think that the "phone a friend" idea is great, having seen Paul Zenon do it on his x-mas tv special. True gem tricks like this are very rare and everyone should treasure and love thier ID!!!

I totally agree with you re: Sankeys "X". It is a complete killer - and if in the past you have done the traditional ID with someone a few months ago the I have found the effect is even stronger for them

The variations which are possible once you've learned the basic magic methods, sleights and techniques are almost boundless.

Sankey's X takes an old favourite, and adds an interesting and refreshing twist to the plot.

There's so much to be said for the ID... it's stood the test of time, as does most good magic. It's easy to perform, easy to maintain, and hey - once you've seen how it works, you can even make your own.

A true classic.

Despite owning a number of more expensive and (technically) more impressive tricks, this is always the one that leaves people slack-jawed... it'd perfect for beginners and totally defies easy explanation... i've done it every time i've performed and it gets the biggest reaction almost without fail!!!

As a slight alternative, I bought a mini ID (OK, I know I could have made my own!) and this has exactly the same sized impact as the big version. Apart from taking up less space, and being easily switchable for a regular deck, the small size seems to give it a sort of 'cute' and safe image as though such a small deck must be innocent. If it's introduced after a card or card case shrinking effect it seems even more innocent. Just like me!

OK - here's a weird alternative to the standard routine... might spice your life up...

Just as an aside, I've been putting my ID - in it's box, on the table.

The spectator names a card. The box has been on the table, unopened the whole time...

You mention magic moves - and mention the simplest move is the 'invisible turnover', where you turn the whole deck over, and one card stays the same way. You reach over, and just roll the box over 180 degrees.

Say 'it's done!'. Open the box (making sure you know which way up!!!) and remove the deck - spread through, show the selection is turned over. Voila!

Eliminates the standard 'here's one I prepared earlier' routine - and makes the trick appear as if the magic's happened in front of the spectator at the moment the deck is revolved. Easy, but quite effective.

As a complete saddo, I actually watched the D.Blaine Street Magician prog last week where he handed the boxed deck to a spec to hold and asked him to think of any card. Having pointed out that the deck had been in the spec's hands all the while, the correct card was found to be the only one face down etc. 'No frills' magic and full of impact. I have to hand it to DB on that one as it worked very well!

This trick seems really good but i cant do it. I cannot perform this at all yet even after practising for about an hour. when i try to spread the cards i just cannot do it right. does anyone have any tips like holding the deck together really tightly at the base of the fan or something like that?

Im not surprizedyou arent able to master it. You should practice for about a week, let alone an hour. the trick isnt all that difficult to perform but i still practiced it for about a week before it even left my house. Im not trying to get at you as i can see that your very keen but you should be spending mor time practicing.

Rant over

Just relax, don't hold the cards too tight and practice a bit more! It may help to apply a little downwards pressure as you spread them. It is likely that you are trying to make it too hard, imagine that it is easy and I bet you'll get it right first time!

of course, bw is right, I assume that you are just frustrated at not being able to do it right and have no intention of showing anyone for a while yet.

(having said that I showed someone within ten minutes of opening mine when I got it so I will now go and punish myself!)
