AVATAR file size

Postby Jordan C » Mar 15th, '06, 18:19

I've tried and tried to reduce my avatar to below 8k but anytime I do it is distorted and pixelated. Can we increase avatar file size to 16k?

If I remember right, the Avatar size was increased last year for a while but it caused other problems of some sort so was set back to the original 8k.

Gonna have to stick with the same boring avatar then cos 8k is wayyyyyyyyyyyy too small!!!!

pixel sizes can still be set the same its jus the file size. Also other boards allow for scale down size. Is this not possible with this board?

As with the log in problems, that's something the Forum Owner would need to check and deal with. In general I think we're on the maximum practical arrangement for Avatars so perhaps not much can be done if the chosen image doesn't fit as it is. I had a great animated version of my Avatar but the only way it could be made to fit meant it was at a very low resolution and it looked even more cruddy than the static one!

Are you sure you can't get it under 8k? I've had no problem reducing my images...

Try PMing me the image and I'll have a go :D.

I just wish there was a "standard" on Avatars and sizes; one site accept the one I've been using with no problem while others don't. If I crunch it down more than it is things get blurred and uglier than my photo normally is

Kati and I have tongiht been trying to get my pic sorted. It is 6.something k, 8k on disc but when uploaded TM wont accept sayin it is 8.18. Combine this with my login problems - still ongoing - and me thinks there may be an unseen glitch somewhere.

About the avatar size: would it be possible to increase it to 8.5kB or so? I don't see that making any problems and it would allow higher quality images.

(Explanation: I think NTFS default cluster size is just over 4kB so if you have a picture over 4kB it's going to be just over 8kB on disk so TM won't accept it.)

I'm not being rude, but for some reason I am thinking of Golem right now...

(ok, so maybe it was a little rude - for which I apologise)

Nice to see you JC.

Hi Simon......

Golem??????????

Origins of the word
The word golem is used in the Bible to refer to an embryonic or incomplete substance: Psalm 139:16 uses the word "gal'mi", meaning "my unshaped form" (in Hebrew, root words are defined by sequences of consonants, ie. glm). The Mishnah uses the term for an uncultivated person ("Ten characteristics are in a learned person, and ten in an uncultivated one", Pirkei Avoth 5:7). Similarly, Golems are used today primarily in metaphor either as brainless lunks or as entities serving man under controlled conditions but enemies in others. Similarly, it is a Yiddish slang insult for someone who is clumsy or slow.

We can assure you that this was no easy task. I went as low as I could with Photoshop, Kati went as far as he could with GIMP and eventually after about 12 hours Kati transferred it from a weblink.
