Jim Pace's The Web

Hi all, sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but I'm also having issues with the card count for this effect. I bought it last week but was disappointed to see it doesn't really explain the "flu....tion count". The rest of the instructions are reasonably clear with good illustrations etc, but it seems to assume that you know how to do this count.

I've had a look on "the youtube" and among the myriad 15yr olds in their bedrooms doing card tricks (with NHS glasses and dodgy jumpers), I was also able to see some good examples of the count being performed, however I'm still none the wiser as to how to do this myself.

Can anyone PM me with a few pointers?

the misdirection involved for placing the spider in the spectators hand is really good. Over all the effect is simple to perform and has good impact on the audidience.

I use the paul zennon idea with the spider and a wine glass, in the right plae at the right time this can be the best effect ever.

Might interest owners of The Web: it's virtually the same plastic spider you get in the original effect, although has an extra plastic bit on the bottom you'd have to remove.

Sorry for starting the thread again but I just want to write a new review.

The Effect
You present some blank cards. You wave your hand over and spiderwebs appear on the cards. Wave your hand over again and the webs dissapear. The spectator waves their hand over the cards only to find a giant spider.

Cost
£7.99 from www.magicshop.co.uk

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
3 if you are new to magic.
1 if you are experienced

Review
The Web by Jim Pace is a great effect that can be performed anywhere and is virtually improptu. You need to be careful when choosing a victim... um... spectator to perform the effect on. This trick can make people hate you. Seriously. Aside from that, I like The Web because not only does it come with it's own patter, but you can use the props in many different ways, and in other effects. Another bad point is that some of the parts are not 100% percent reliable, but if you are having trouble with the props then just alter your routine.

Overall
I think that The Web is a must have for most magicians at only £7.99. Even if you don't intend on using the routine, making your own up is easy. It has a few cons to it, but overall I would give it a 7.5/10.

I may be wrong here, but aren't people worrying too much about the 'magic' of the cards?

Surly the idea is that people see what they think is a mediocre card trick with a shock ending introduced?

My handling on the cards is clumsy on purpose, however my reveal is a bit different.

I place the spider (you know where) by giving them an empty box to hold.
I show everyone its an empty box, then at the end I ask them to open it, they expect a spider, see there's nothing there, then I say 'show everyone the box',
then they see the spider.

This is a trick I only do with a gathering of friends or at Halloween. I see it as less of a 'magic trick' and more of a prank.

I still love it though.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Hurray for resurrected threads! I love The Web but never thought of doing it with a box or a tumbler - that's just brilliant. I can see it playing perfectly and it means that at "high class" gigs you don't have to bring out four grubby little playing cards and concoct some story about "blowing webs away" or whatever.

Cheers guys :D

I absolutely love this trick. This is one to resurrect if you haven't played around with it. A great Holloween staple...

I don't see how it could be less impromptu if it tried.
(Text deleted by Mods - too much detail for the Public Area)
Tis a great trick in the right situation, but it is not impromptu by any definition I am familiar with...

Agreed. The word "impromptu" seems to cause a lot of confusion, frustration and controversy with magicians... it should mean "made or done without previous preparation" - a truly impromptu trick is one with borrowed objects and absolutely zero set up. "Little setup", "instant reset" etc. would be more appropriate here.

On another note, if anyone's spider is worse for wear, I've found these which look pretty good: Spider and Fly. It's one of those situations where you'd think it'd be easy to find something as they're so common, but turns out to be quite difficult, and you end up considering importing 50,000 from China...! Most of them are too big, too small, to rubbery etc. but I've just ordered a few of these and have high hopes.

Farlsbrough, I second the Spider and Fly item, have used these before, having got them from eBay, and they look pretty damn identical to the one supplied with the Web. Also, there was a link provided a while back on this thread that had almost identical Web spiders, but with an extra plastic bit you'd have to cut off. The point is that the Web spiders ARE available, but for every authentic Web looking spider, there's a whole host of bright glow in the dark toy like ones that will just look silly. It's all about the reaction though, so it's a means to an end, but if you're a pedant like me then you might want to a substitute spider that looks as smilar to the Web spider as possible.

More contentious, however, is sourcing the sticky stuff you get in the Web. Someone somewhere must know the answer. Am alright at the mo, but my supply will run out soon.

www.cards4magic.co.uk also sell the Spider's Web Bicycle stock card.

Yeah - it's not so much I'm desperate for it to be identical to the original one supplied, I just want it to be a realistic size and shape. Obviously it needs to be a bit bigger and blacker than the ones we get in the UK usually, but anything with big tubular legs, day-glo patches or little faces drawn on etc. would just look silly.

I believe most people just use "sticky dots", which are put out by either Blu-Tack or Bostik or Uhu or someone, available in the same sort of packaging and in the same place as regular blu-tack.
