Leaving Home by Jay Sankey

Available from: MagicTricks.co.uk

Cost: £10.99

Difficulty: 2/3

Product Description:

The classic 'Ring on String' has been taken to a new, and simpler, level. Visually melt a key off of a piece of string, and then right in front of their eyes, flick the rope, and the key has been placed back onto the string. Everything is completely examinable at the end.

Product Review:

I remember the first time I saw this done - I wasn't quite as well read as I am now and it was many years ago now, but I was floored. This was one piece of magic that kept bugging me - I just couldn't figure it out at all. Now, I wasn't a layperson back then, but I was closer to one then than I am now, and I thought that this piece was simply amazing. No other word to describe it - so when I came across it again all those years later I snapped it up, knowing the impact that it could have on other people.

First off, the equipment you receive is very nice. Good quality. There is a tiny bit of prep work to be done, but then you're set for life. It literally takes about three of four or five or so seconds.

You have a nice, two-phase routine, which is good because the first phase is mildly impressive and sets them up for the KO visual penetration. And oh yes is it visual. The key and the string melt back together in an instant.

It will take a fair amount of practise to get the effect down, but each day you get better and better and it is something I am sure you will love performing yourself. The materials are easy enough to carry, a piece of cord with a key on it around your neck.

My one qualm would be the fact that the key you get with it is not cut so in this sense it does not look like an actual key you would use - but most people do not seem to notice at all.

Now, on to the DVD! Everything is explained very clearly indeed in a one-on-one with Jay. This is not a rush-job, this is a fairly substantial DVD which goes in to great detail on how to perform the effect, when to perform the effect, as well as additional tips and ideas and moves for this piece. You also get a printed set of instructions on the back of the DVD front cover of the case. Put these two together and you will have no problems learning the effect whatsoever.

For the price - it is a good buy. Knock a couple of pounds off it - let's say about two, and you have an absolute killer baragin. Instant reset (obviously), with two ordinary and fully-examinable items - a key and a piece of cord. Great for table-hopping and is IMO a very nice, quick and visual opener with many patter lines available to it.

Recommended.

9/10.

Nice review, Cardza. My son bought this a few months ago and he can do it superbly now. We both totally agree... it is excellent!

I bought killer key another sankey effect some time ago, that also involves a key and a dup which were both blank on arrival. I took both down to Timpsons in town, it took them 10 seconds to cut a pattern into both and they did not even charge me.
maybe worth a try.

Yes.

If you like the idea of this and lots of other Sankey stuff, then I recommend Sankey Unleashed. It has Leaving Home, Holey Moley, Back in Time and lots of others and is a bargain!

Leaving home - it has to be said - is a very, VERY nice piece of business.

Sure, the handling's a little knacky to begin with, but it's relatively easy to pick up with a few day's worth of practise.

Just to address a point that's already been raised; I was a little surprised at the un-cut/blank key shaft too...before I realised that this very oddity actually suggests a couple of nice presentations:

For the younger folks, I introduce this as a replica TARDIS key, and patter about it being connected to the real TARDIS (yeah, I know...geek!! ), and sharing some of the same properties, like being able to dematerialise from the cord, and rematerialise underneath it, effectively freeing itself (then performing the first penetration).

Also - the key is actually able to travel through time; I let them see how the key is able to move back in time by exactly one minute, to the time it was still tied onto the cord (performing the return to cord)

The presentation I use with older folks is to say that it's a new front-door key, that I'm in the process of training. I explain that I was always loosing my old key, and eventually it went missing altogether.

Then I talk about our local key-cutter, being a little eccentric, and insisting that I wear an uncut key around my neck for at least a week, to 'train' it, before he would cut it for me, to ensure the new copy would never go missing.

I then demonstrate how the new key still isn't quite trained by penetrating it off the cord.

Finally, after some fun, describing how I'm going to discipline the key for it's naughty ways, I whip the key several times with the free end of the cord ("Bad Key...BAAAD key!" - I kid you not  ), before re-penetrating it, and handing it out.

S'funny the things I think of when seeing something like an un-cut key, y'know....I'll be off, time to take my medication now

Great trick!

A couple ideas:

I have incorporated this into my "Chinese Challenge" routine - but this idea can be used in any "ring on string" type of effect.

Also, when I do the penetration - I do it in mid-air (instead of off my hand).
Best wishes-

I have just ordered this and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive.
If it's as good as it looks/seems then it's going into the set.

It is as good as people make out although most people tend to perform the key reattach badly in my opinion.
Most tend to throw the key in the air where it attaches to the string and is left dangling in the air but when you see sankey do it the key barely leaves his hand...far more impact I find as the spectator does recognise the difference. This is much hard to do though I have found and still aint got it 100%
