Cut Controls by Jerry Sadowitz

Postby Lenoir » Sat Feb 14, 2009 9:00 pm

I'm reviewing it, but to be honest, you're not going to get your hands on it ...ever, unless you get lucky!

It's only a short review because a.) It's a short booklet, b.) I am tired and c.)You're very unlikely to ever own it anyway.

I got mine from eBay, amazingly. I've never seen one before and since.
It is signed, "f*** off, Sado."

What is it?
A relatively rare booklet by Jerry Sadowitz, out of print and not readily available second hand either!

The booklet, as the title suggests, is a series of false cuts, cut controls and effects utilizing these techniques.

The Cover Pass Positional Control

An extension of the Classic Pass false cut idea, using the cover pass as a false cut, leaving the top card in any desired position.

Several effects using it, including some tasty sandwiches and clever transpositions.

Sterankovitz
A technically demanding(ish) sleight which can achieve several things. Mainly...a card peeked at in the middle of the pack, deck given one complete cut an then cards spread to show peeked at card, face up.

Crouching Vernon, Hidden Hamman
A really really super clean looking control using small packets cut off into the L.H. It is as fair as it can get.

There are tonnes of false cuts, false swing cuts, Bobby Bernard's false cut, lots.

Plenty of effects too, all of them very Sadowitz, to the point and efficiant.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

4-5

Review
To start with, it's hilarious. I was crying with laughter when reading the False Sybil cut instructions. Not only does he give you a real false sybil, but instructions on how to kill yourself, for knowing a sybil in the first place.

Every cut, sleight and effect is well thought out and presented in the typical handwritten Sadowitz style.

Overall:

8/10
Pretty damn good, although not ground breaking.

This is a great book, some excellent ideas in here. Sadowitz has started selling his stuff only to trusted magicians he knows, as he's sick of his material being on torrent sites. His "Crimp" magazine is really good if you can track any down.

That is a shame, he has been recommended by other magicians who's work I like but since he is restricting the sale of his books and "The Crimp" it does limit the ability of people who are interested in what the other magicians are talking about to find out.

It really is a shame that people who are unwilling to acquire legal copies of published works are causing those who are willing to purchase magic books legally to be unable to do so.

I got lucky! Although it was expensive Ebay luck, its well worth the buy. Having just reached the point where I can realistically consider practicing a 'Cover Pass', I'm working on the 1st chapter just now, but there's a lot of material in this little booklet! Classic Excellent Sadowitz stuff!

Re: 'The Crimp'....Ive tried a few times to get a subscription, the last time even with Roy Waltons endorsement, but he's still saying no and that he's long stopped taking subscriptions from anyone. I genuinely think you'd have to know him & ask him personally. To be fair he's always replied to my emails & been extremely helpful and generous with excellent advice.

Personally I dont see any way round his problem of plagiarism...it irks me that I cant get a 'Crimp', but I see his point. Having said that, he's doing a pretty good job of keeping his stuff off the net anyway.

But hey, Ebay is your friend !

For someone who constantly rails agains the fact that he's not as successful as he wants to be, Mr S does a very good job of hiding his light under a bushel.

I noticed it is being sold on lybrary.com ( martin bresse's website) as a Pdf. Although Jerry got quite annoyed by the fact it is on there

Actually the Lybrary website does not belong to Martin Breese. It belongs to Chris Wasshuber. Martin sold a lot of his material to Chris including I presume the Sadowitz stuff. I have some material on there too which Martin sold to Chris. And here is my hypnosis course advertised on the site.

And mention of Sadowitz reminds me of something although it is not related to this thread. He was at my psychic lecture last year and I have today heard from International Magic that the DVDs of my course are finally on their way to me. Since I have been waiting a year for them this is a most historic occasion. The Tarot one must be finally on sale now. The Chinese Numerology and Palmistry one has been out for some time.

OK. You can go back to talking about Sadowitz now.

You'll never find Cut Controls on the Lybrary! Jerry was upset that Breese republished his early books, and his tricks do not appear in the electronic version of Pabular, either.

He has certainly worked for International Magic in the past. I don't know if he still does. He is very closely connected with them at any rate. As I used to be at one time.
There. That confession should put them out of business quite soon, I imagine.
