Advice ending a coin routine

Postby thebigcheese » Mon Jan 04, 2010 10:02 pm

Hi, I'm after a bit of thought, maybe a discussion who knows?
Im after a strong ending for a coin routine as a closer to a close up walk around piece, that is mainly performed with cards, plus "napkin spongeballs" and a couple of other variables.
I was pointed towards the watch steal in Matthew Dowdens Party animal as a closer, but I dont like the idea of a watch steal.
Ive tried a "triple climax" kind of ending with a coin under watch, to beermat to specs pocket, but it doesnt quite play big enough as a closer!
Im probably a bit too fussy I know.
Ive tried going from spongeball napkins to the old one where they go over the specs head as a closer and that works well, but I do fancy this coin routine as a closer.
Oops, forgotto mention it so far..
Its a in the hands coins across, to a vanish, to a change of coin value in specs hand to ERM....
Argh!

Sorry for the long post! Hope it makes some sense??

i do neither sponge nor coin...however...

visually - i'd quite like to see a sponge ball compress and change into a coin, or t'other way round...i think that would look quite unusual...

pocket/beermat/watch seems to me the more impressive order, as in it would be progressively harder to do without people noticing if under challenge situations...

Ending for a Coin Routine

Postby Allen Tipton » Tue Jan 05, 2010 2:46 pm

Why not try a 'shower of coins' as once put out by Derek Dill.

If you can't find DD's gimmick version work put your mind to finding a method.
It can be accomplished quite easily.. think cling film.
The sight of a stream either small or large, of coins, cascading from the hand, will intrigue spectators.

Thanks very much for your hasty replies. It has provoked some thought.
IAIN:
The order of vanishes you suggested seems very logical, and pretty easy to implement, many thanks.

Also, your thought of changing the coin entirely to a different object made me think..Possibly change it to a bottle-cap? I'm not realy a sponge aficionado. I dont know if this has been done before, but I'm sure I'm not breaking new ground. Any thoughts?

Allen:
Thanks, the idea of a shower of coins seems like it could work: again, maybe with bottlecaps after a change? Is it ok to PM you, if thats the correct term? Once I get my head around a pottential method?

Thanks again!

i will sugest to you, what Ive sugested to guys in the states.
If you search ebay, you can find a guy that makes finger rings out of coins.

you could transform the coin into the ring, and then go into a ring on string / rubber band routine.

The rings are completely un gaffed.

Those coin rings aren't actually that difficult to make if you've got more time & less money, but it's worth noting that the coin must have a certain silver content IIRC.

Here is a radical way to look at it, you are looking for a closer so I'm assuming you have an opener. Sounds like the beginings of a story to me. Go ahead and tell the story, where do you want it all to go? It doesn't have to be as deep as I'm making it sound. The only way to make a really strong closer is to build it up with everything that comes before it. So look at your entire routine, you may already have your closer now you are just not seeing it. And it is only going to be as good as you are.

I always end with the coins vanishing no matter what. It allowes me to move on and lets face it money basically vanishes in my hands anyway.

Thanks again for everyones enthusiam on replying to my lack of imagination!

I do think the coin turning to a ring is a good idea, its not something, I myself would perform, as ring on rope leads on and I'm after a finale.

Im sure a "coin ring" would be easily fasioned with a vice, drill and masking tape however, I might try purely out of curiosity!

Allen: I recieved your PM, very interesting thought, I think I will make something up and see where I can take it: I will reply to you in due course however. Thank you very much.

i actually misread your post - thought you said about spongeballs, not paper spongeballs...

but maybe some photocopies (colour) of a coin...and a joke coin bend, could then lead into a real coin production, and then onwards...

ah well... I you happen to do an effect with a ring at the beginning of your routine, ( you simply remove the ring from the finger, dont magicaly produce it) you could then change the ring into coins.. do your coin routine, then end it by changing the coins back into the ring, which you place back on the finger.
a rounded, and complete routine, with a definate finish.

I like those rings to use in the way that you mentioned Dale,

What size would a man need? as I'd want to be able to at least get it onto my finger

just go to any jewelers, and have them measure your finger.

Then order the size from the guy. As far as i am aware, ring sizes are standard. :)
