Stigmata by Wayne Houchin

Postby Famuus » Wed May 06, 2009 2:21 pm

My english isn't the best, I'm from belgium.

The Effect
You walk up to a person and ask him/her to think of ANY number between one and ten. You quickly ask them to name the number and they do. You take thier right hand and put it on your underarm and you ask them to sqeeuze very hard. You tell them to think of the number in thier mind. You remind them they they coul'd have picked any number and when they let go, the marks from thier fingers on your arm change into the number of thier choise.
Completly impromtu

Cost

About 25 dollars

Difficulty

(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
I would say 3. There aren't realy any slights used but the presantation of this trick is very important

Review

I anly recieved a dvd, no gimmick or other stuff. I put it in my computer and started watching. I was amazed by how simple the trick was in genaral. The first two parts where a card and a person's innitials appear on the arm were very good and I tested them before i even watched the rest of the dvd. They worked on 4 different persons emediatly. Somebody wrights down the initials of somebody that crosses his mind on a piece of paper, Without looking at them, they appear on your arm as discribed above.
Then I went back to my pc and watched the rest. The 3rd way to do this trick. At the first look i was like 'how can this work?'. So i didn't pay to much attention to it and dit the card/initials thing a few times at work. After a wile i wanted to try the 3rd version. Were somebody just names a number between one and ten. I was stunned how good it worked. I do it every day now, at work they think I am crazy. This is my favorite trick, a reputation maker

Overall

I am verry satisfied about this purchase. This is completly impromtu. You can do this anytime, anywere and any place.
This is now my favorite impromtu trick.

Verry easy to do, and with the right attitude the best trick in your arsenal. They will think you have contact with the lord himself

I genuinely think the principle is a good one.

It isn't Ellusionists or his own (no surprise there) and apparently, it's not credited or referenced anywhere on the DVD.

Not true. They credit Banachek and even have an interview with him, if I remember correctly. Both Houchin and Banachek discuss how they independently created the effect.

Indeed, but it goes way way way way way back before either of them.

It's a really good and use to go in into ashes. First perform stigmata and then say 'wait, I can go one step beyond'

I use this every week. I use it in many different ways. Very strong effect.
I have adapted it to strengthen it even more.

Can anybody recommend an effect where you can make stigmata appear on the hands, feet and if possible out of the eyes with out the use of blood bags etc? I'll be completely naked so it would be great if I don't have any gimmicks as such.

I'm creating a show at the moment around demonic religion and thinking of being crucified. I escape the ropes and then appear in a single spotlight and stigmata appears.

This is a really great effect. Gets amazing reactions every time. There are so many subtleties that can be added to make this a true masterpiece. Wayne only released the skeleton of the effect. This can go much much deeper.
@Lenoir.. If it's not too much too ask, I'm just interested in knowing who came up with this concept..

I think the best collection of stigmata effect has to lie in the nearly perfect volume titled "The Marks of Saint Germain" written by the master of mentalism Al Mann

Further back than the Spiritualists think of the old 12th saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. Stigmata is regarded by the Roman Catholic church as a manifestation of the Holy Ghost. Or in modern Evangelical term "being slain in the Spirit"

As for methods I am not sure who the direct credit would go to. But probably some very wise minded individual.

I don't think St. Francis was asking the other guys in the group to pick a card and then having it show up in his bloody palm

I have to side with Jack Tiller when it comes to this sort of thing... revealing cards and numbers via blood drops & blisters kind of neuters the miracle. Sure, it's interesting and intriguing but you've taken something that could be so very much more and turned it into a bit of corn akin to Hippity Hop Rabbits.

Why?

I go a bit further on the issue of Blood Letting in next months VISIONS issue because of items being marketed by others exploiting the CUPS condition most of us suffer from. What I share will shine some alternative light on this sort of manifestation and its antiquity.

I know that our inner-magician will find this kind of thing fun and "cool" but I hope and pray that some of you will demand that said demon get behind you, so that the greater mind of the "enchanter" might take control of such phenomena in your world; there's such a huge difference between doing a cool trick and creating miracles.

 Hah I was not quite implying that Saint Francis was the type to hide colourful silks under his robe, and to use his crosier as a wand. But I agree with Craig here, too many magicians and like minded mentalists will try and revivea a dead effect by shrouding it in esoteric miracles that come across gaudi and carnivalistic. Also the suggestion and implication of a true miracle would be lost behind the meaning "playing cards" hold to the public. Kenton Knepper makes a good point of this lightly in his manuscript "Miracles of Suggestion"

Many Magicians today try to water their thirsty ego wells, by convincing themselves that their tricks are miracles, when in fact they are putting together aa frankenstein like monster of two potentially great ideas.

Yes, it can be done but no, I'm not going to share the method in that it is far too dangerous... especially for as much blood letting as you wish to generate and the fact that the method in question uses real blood (except for the eyes). Blood Tears can be generated via a system offered by Paper Crane Productions but I can't stress enough just how dangerous the other elements of doing a "nude" Stigmata can be.

that is just plain tacky, and guarenteed to offend many.
