routines for a party and how much to ask?

Postby Miniolo » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:51 am

Hi there im more a walkaround magician with a friend of mine and whe do all kinds of stuff magic, small illusions, mentalism etc.

but whe dont got a real routine.. how do i make one and what about different times sometimes i perform for 1 hour and i can do less then when i will be there for 2 hours... do i stretch the routine or do i add tricks?

is it smart to make routines for themes... wedding/b-day/other

oh and is it smart to make mentalism show, and magic show seperate or integrated? because me and my friend i do magic with have some amazing Mentalism tricks that are only possible with two of us... u probably know which ones;)

oh and how much do u ask for a show...

You need to be more specific with your question. Are you talking about working as a close-up magician? Or stage? One of you working or you plus your friend?

The most common type of work is close-up, going from table to table or small group to small group. This usually happens at corporate events, wedding receptions and birthday parties. You then obviously won't need a routine lasting an hour or more. I've used just one routine at some bookings, and used it at every table. It's a bloody good routine mind you.

How much to charge? Ah, there is the rub. Think of a number and double it. Then when another magician asks you how much you charge, tell him double your real fee.

Sounds to me like you're talking more about a parlour routine? A 1 hour routine is quite a long routine to put together from scratch. If I were you, I'd probabaly start off with a 15 minute routine and gradually build on that.

but remember it's not just about filling out those 2 hours with tricks, anyone can do that. It's making those 2 hours entertaining, that's the difficult part and the part that so many magicans seem to forget.

Not much call for parlour work...

My advice, if you want to earn money from this, is to start off doing close-up. Get yourself a good name, and then the doors to the parlour may open for you.

I don't think you're getting my point. Your tricks need to be routined into a performance that people will enjoy watching. It's that working those 2 hours of tricks into something that flows and entertains is the most difficult part of putting otgether your routine and the most important part. I spend months just working out a 15 minute act, to put together 2 hours from nothing is very very difficult.

Are you sure you're ready for this? Trust me, start with close-up/walkaround. No need to dive in at the deep end.

Trust the magicwand and listen to Lady of Mystery. Just the fact, and the way you are asking the questions means you are not ready for 2 hours, not to mention an hour.
