Trick: 10p Folding Coin
From: Abrakazam.com
Price: £11.99
What You Get: Gimmicked 10p and 6 tiny elastic bands(2 of which r already on)
Examinable: Only with a simple switch, unless you do the routine i do which means you will end clean.

Effects:-
-Snack Time(Bitten 10p: You take a spectators 10p then visably bite a chunk out of it, you then procced to turn it 180 degrees and bite another cunk out of it. You can then go on and make the 2 pieces appear at once or 1 at a time.

Coin in a Bottle: A little self explanitary but again you take someones 10p then let them try and push it into a bottle with no luck. You then take it off of them and just fling it right in. The coin is on retreived when the bottle is smashed(glass bottle) or cut open(plastic bottle).

Torn and Restored Coin:Again you take someones 10p then tear off two sides of it, the put it into my closed palm and the 2 pieces return.

Like i said earlier, in my routine i like to end clean to at the end of the torn and restored i do a f**** t******* and then open my hand to show it has disappeared.

Conclusion: This was the first trick i bought this year, and i was very impressed with the tricks you can do with it and the quality of the coin. i have made up a few other effects like coin through hand, pulling a coin out through a wallet and coin clone.

Over all this coin gets a 9/10 and it is my fav coin trick.

Colin

Hi Colin,
Thanks for that review. I'd agree that this is an excellent product. However, I have looked high and low on Abrakazam and cannot find this product listed (not for the price you mention, anyway). From the description you give, this sounds exactly the same as the version I have from another Internet magic supplier (I won't mention their name). Sure you got it here? maybe I've just missed it.

Abrakazam normally sell them, but they are in short supply at the moment, keep trying or email them to find out when they'll be available.

Pete,

just to let you know that magictricks .co .uk sell this product.

I've bought several items from these guys and found them to be fast and reliable.

I found that the 50p version is 10 times better than the 10p,its bigger so your audience can see more of it than the 10p and the craftmanship of this prop is a lot better.
anyone who has this trick will agree.

I have also got both 10p and 50p. The 50p is much better.

the 50p is better because it is easier to use as it is bigger but you can aslo get other coins aswell as the 10p and 50p!! and coins with two folds in rather than one!

The original review is for a FOLDING coin. This is quite different from a bite-out coin, as a folding coin generally has two folds.

Personally, I find the 'bite-out' coin trick to be far too obvious in performance, as too is the 'tearing coin'. I'm not suggesting that these tricks are not worthy of performing, and I've often been asked 'can you do that thing the bloke on telly does where he bites a coin???'. Well, yes, I can, but unless they seriously believe I've got titanium plated, diamond edge teeth, I'm afraid it's a little bit of a gag rather than magic.

The quality of these items varies dramatically in proportion to their price. I have 10p, 50p, half-dollar and 50 cent coins in various guises. For instance, the quality of cut, whether the cut is 'profile', i.e. it follows the engraving on the coin and is less conspicuous, or whether it's laser-cut.

The best i've found so far are from emagictricks.co.uk, although they are all of a decent enough quality.

The advantages of a folding 10p over a folding 50p, in my opionion, is that when doing 'coin in bottle' routines (which are the only reason I see these coins having any use in real performance) you have a better chance of getting a 10p out of smaller bottles. Plus the fact that when I've performed this trick at weddings and things, people are usually more likely to have a 10p in their pocket, although I do carry the 50p with me just in case!

I agree that the 50p folding coin is better for biting... more of the coin is visible. Genuine bite-out coins, however, have an advantage over folding coins in that they are specifically designed to give the effect of having teeth-marks in them.

The folding coin mentioned and reviewed at the top of this thread is more of a wavy-line cut, I'm sure. Plus, a biting coin has a stronger snap-back, so there's less flashing as the coin 'pops' back into place.

So if biting is your thing, check out a proper bite-out coin.

Tips
1: The more you uses these, the more rounded the cuts become, and after a while you'll quite clearly see the cuts in the coin. Replace them every now and then.

2: I've found that when doing coin-in-bottle, put TWO bands around the coin. The small bands are quite prone to snapping when the coin is jerked back out of the bottle, and a second band is an insurance policy!

3: Although these coins look quite convincingly normal, try not to let people burn them too much. Keep the edges pointing at the ceiling and floor, as the outer groove in the rim can give them away. Try and borrow a coin and switch between the two, if possible.

4: Don't store them for long periods with a band on... the band will perish and the coin will fail during your first couple of folds. Get a nice coin wallet and put a new band (or two!!!) on the coin just before each performance.

Overall, a good multi-utility prop, but use sparingly.

Wicked trick!
but, after a while, it becomes a bit more obvious.

As I said in my previous post, Antonio, use the effect sparingly. Tricks like this should never be overdone, as they suggest physical impossibility.

Plus, as I also mentioned earlier, constant use will wear the 'fold'.
Use a utility move like the Flying Shuttle to exchange coins, and keep the fake moving, that way, it will not become obvious.

The flying shuttle or retention pass, or even French drop will hide even quite a badly worn coin if you keep your hands moving.

Failing that, they are relatively inexpensive to replace, and it is far better to spend the money again than for a layman to discover the secret.
