coin unique problems

Postby samjazzy » Aug 28th, '06, 02:31

I just purchased my Coin Unique and althought it is a very visual effect - it is far from examanable at all in my opinion. People have talked about it being an examanable trick, but even when u caress both sides gently, (there are suggestions of the gimmick). when u throw the tails side which is the insert side gently into your other hand there is a flimsy feeling. I just wondered if anyone else shares this same problem - it has made me uncomfortable to use the coin unique without switching pound coins - which can be risky, as it is not examanible. has any1 any tips on how to make it more examinable / hide the slightly wobbling insert tails side? thanks in advance, these solutions have probably come up before - but in my search i could only find reviews / sales and details of alternative effects on the coin unique.

I understand what you mean about the spinning, but it's not easy to find that. However, I don't know what you mean by "wobble" and "flimsy". Of course it is not 100% examinable. Also I think it's important that you don't get into the habbit of wanting everything examinable. Also are people asking to examine the coin, or are you offering it to them? Remeber that most people don't know that gimmick coins even exist. To them if it looks real then it is.

There may well be an issue of exposure with your post, samjazzy.

As for your problem, it won't take you too long to learn how to switch the coin for a normal £1 - and to be honest, you'll probably feel much better for it, too.

You will also be a more accomplished magician.

Have you got an original Eddie Gibson version or did you think you'd save yourself a few quid and get 1 off Ebay

If you've got an Eddie Gibson version, the insert should be fairly tight and secure.

As Mahoney stated, most people won't even know that a gimmicked coin even exists, so when you've performed whatever trick you're doing, just flip the pound coin over in the palm of your hand to show both sides of the coin. Most people then grab your sleeves and/or examine your hands more thoroughly. They see both sides of the coin and for most people that's enough. I've even had some people ask me to remove my watch and ring so that they can examine them further lol

yes, its the original eddie gibson from magicbox.uk.com and people seem to insist on examining the coins themselves. Another problem i've encountered is that there is a clicking sound when passing the coin over the penny. This, to me, seems to make it pretty obvious what the gimmick is :S

I think you must be doing something to make them suspicious of it, Samjazzy. I've been using Coin Unique for three decades and, hand on my heart, nobody has ever suspected a gaff coin. As always, it's down to presentation.

I must agree with pudding, i have used Eddie coins for many years and never had any problems with the coins and audiences.

I would suspect that it's your presentation tha tyou need to work on. I'm an Eddie user and like the others, I haven't had problems.

You want to leave people thinking 'what the f--- happened there' rather than looking straight at the coin. In the meantime you;ve moved on to something else.

It sounds like you def need to hone your presentation of this.

One simple, but very effective presentation that I use is as follows:

Place the 2 "coins" side by side on a spectator's palm. Move them closer together and overlap them so that the pound is on top of the penny with about 1/4 of the penny protruding underneath. Make a comment on how the penny is underneath the pound making it much less accessible to you. The next bit is a bit tricky to explain but it goes something like: wave your right hand over the coins and pick the two coins up as one using your thumb and first two fingers of your left hand (the right hand helps obscure the picking up of the coins as the right hand should be above the left hand when you pick the coins up) - all of this should be done in 1 continuous motion. You then show that you're only holding a pound coin in between your thumb and first two fingers of your left hand.

Place this coin in the palm of your right hand, pause for a second and then flip it over and reveal the other side of the coin. If the specs haven't already started grabbing my sleeves and looking on the floor for the missing penny, I sometimes flip the coin over again just to re-confirm that the penny is def not underneath the pound

I sometimes add a bit of patter when people start asking where the penny went to. I usually say something like "Well to tell you the truth, that's why I don't really like doing this trick - that's 12p I've lost today". Usually gets a giggle lol

I have found that most people are happy to just see the coin both sides and accept that it gone.

Family and friends are different they want to pull everything to bits!!!

I use the 10p 2p version and have had people pick it up and say if feels a bit strange due to weight I think, but I have had no problems with spinning, it would not be a normal reaction during examination.

If you end on this you may be asked to show the coin. but move on and you will be fine.

Sit the 1p under the £1 with approx half showing then get the spec to place a plastic cup or tea cup over the top. Each place a finger on the top of the cup and in a weigi (sorry about the spelling  ) board fashion push the cup around in circles, increasing the speed.

When the edge of the cup hits the coin the secret will happen as it moves around the inside due to the centrifugal force.

Remove the cup and the 1p has gone and this stuns the specs with the right patter

I also have a coin unique, and agree with the points made about it not being 100% examinable. In the magician's ideal world it would be, but hey we should earn our crust. At first I felt awkward switching it out for a regular coin, but with some work the presentation should sell it enough for you not to have to do that. I personally do two tricks mainly with it, one of which has been described by dat8962 - a very nice method; I personally use a glass or seethrough cup and perform it myself, as it is much more visual and takes the heat off as people immediately assume it was somehow an act of skill rather than magic..... a few minutes scrabbling on the floor, or a quick repetition with hands surrounding the glass soon helps to disperse any such thought! The other method I use employs a signed coin (in the penny pound version it is the 1p that is signed). The basic method (hopefully not exposing) is as follows:

Borrow a 1p from someone, often under the pretext that you have a £1 but would like a 1p too, whilst the matching gimmick is palmed. Have the borrowed 1p signed (careful which side). Have a sheet of paper examined, then fold the paper up concealing the palmed item beneath it, holding the borrowed 1p against the paper. Thanks to the gimmick, you can imagine what happens there. A large glass is then examined, whilst you turn the paper over, and place it on the glass, with the *ahem* borrowed 1p in plain view (here is where the care over which side was signed pays off). If you then apply moonbeam's handling, perhaps whilst a spec holds the paper in place, you will get the usual effect, plus the startling revelation of the signed 1p inside the glass. Accept the applause graciously.

Please PM if you want any more information, mods please edit ruthlessly at will.
