Copentro Deluxe

Postby Stephen Ward » Jun 21st, '06, 21:43

The Effect

This is a real classic of magic. A wooden base is shown, a small shot glass is placed on the stand. Then a pint size glass is placed over the shot glass. Finally you cover the whole thing with a silk. You then display 4 coins on a wooden stand. You take each coin in turn and toss them into the glass. When the silk is removed the coin is in the shot glass that is still covered by the large glass. This process is repeated for each coin. When it comes to the 4th coin you remove the silk and the coin will visibly penetrate the glasses.

Cost

The average price is £95.00. There is a video demo on www.jbtv.co.uk

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1. Very, very easy to perform. You will learn this in 10 minutes easily.

Review

I was shocked that this has not been reviewed on here, so here goes!

The effect is ideal for cabaret and stage work (stand near the edge of the stage for best effect). Close-up is ok to a point but not too close! the effect is not suitable for walkabout because it is bulky and the reset time is long.

The spectators can examine the coins, the silk and all the glasses. I use an 18 " silk with mine. This is a very strong effect that is very convincing for the layperson. I have performed this many times and always get great reactions. As for coins i would stick to either 10P or half dollars.

The kit comes with everything apart from the coins and the silk. You will receive the base, a coin stand and both glasses.

It does feel a bit strange working this at first, but after a few goes it really does become second nature.

At this price it may not be one for the hobbist but it really is a great tool for the working magician.

Overall

9/10 This effect is strong and worth more than the asking price.

As this is a stage effect, I can't see why anyone who is looking to purchase this item, would not have any silks of their own.

What about a fellow CUPS sufferer? Will they be able to purchase such an item (let alone promote it ).

That was a nice review Stephen and in the near future I will look into purchasing this item - that is if I ever get a chance to move a little further away from my audience  .

This item is excellent!

I bought myself one a while back, it looks and sounds really magical.

I use it in some hids shows! so cabaret isnt out of the question.

Forgot to point out, there are copies around that I don't think are as good, so always look for the original.

I haven't seen any of the copies, but by the nature of the mechanics of this you will need to make sure that it is well made, so even without any of the other issues surrounding buying cheap copies I would suggest going for this one.

Has anyone had alignment issues with the bits on the bottom? The demo one we had in at Studio 9 when I worked there need occasional adjustment to be able to set it up easily.

I had to 'adjust' mine too. There have been several copies over the years. Mainly from India, the problem with some copies is 'strength'. I can reset quickly now, just takes practise (and some luck!)

Edit: You can buy this without the coin base, these are STILL originals

Coprentro

Postby Allen Tipton » Jun 23rd, '06, 14:41

:) Most of us bought this trick from Jack Hughes in the 1950's.! He began with a tray method which needed an assistant(later improved) then the one handed version, on a polished wood base. You now know this as Coprentro, though it has been in American catalogues for many years. The JH model ALWAYS worked. You only had to watch the last coin which sometimes missed the small glass and landed on the plinth.I believe the wooden plinth was later replaced by a plastic one. Derek Lever, as far as I know holds the rights. The final version Jack came up with was a 10 second Remote control model worked with a clockwork music box device and not held. Details of all these are in Derek's first JH book, pages 46 to 53

I am very interested in this and have deduced that you have to hold the stand to do the business.

The mention above of a remote control version is more appealing to me, is this still around/ availble?
