The tempest Concept DVD

Postby Stephen Ward » Oct 3rd, '06, 22:26

The Effect

The DVD starts with the Tempest concept principle. For reasons of exposure i cannot list these, but lets just say there are several sections on this, this includes the important psychology.

The effects

Tempest The magician retrieves a freely selected card from a deck shuffled by the spectator after it has been placed into his pocket.

Maelstrom Using X-ray Glasses you are able to see thru a spectators clothing to determine the position of their card in a deck they've shuffled and placed in their pocket

Typhoon An offbeat variation where the spectator puts on a pair of X-ray glasses and tells the audience the position of their card in the magician's pocket

Cyclone A pickpocket demo. A freely selected card is magically removed from a boxed and rubber-banded deck and appears in the magician's pocket (yes it really is the same card)

Tornado A vanish of a freely chosen card from a boxed deck after the spectator has shuffled the cards.

Storm Two methods for no palm card to pocket

Scirroco A four card control for many routines

The Tempest Control Can't detail this due to exposure

Breeze parts of this i won't mention  but can end with signed card in bottle.

Review

I pre-ordered this, it arrived Monday and i have been going through the material. This is going to be such a hard review to write and here is why!
I have to consider this from two viewpoints (more of this later).

The DVD begins with the concept itself. This uses any deck in any condition, it can be in a right state and be fine. The concept you learn let's you perform the effects. Here is the first problem! several situations can occur when using this principle. When 'something' happens you need to be really bold and use some psychology. How confident are you? can you do a blantant cheat right in front of the people and look natural?

The first thing that most people will latch onto is seeing the card in bottle mentioned. Please be aware that you cannot perform this as shown without certain conditions being correct (i have to be vague due to exposure). Some of the concept is not that new and has been adapted. It is a good DVD don't be get me wrong but he lies the problem for some people:

Review from a non-worker viewpoint:

You have a nice set of tricks that you can do with any deck of cards, no set-up or gimmicks. However, if you are performing a few tricks from this at a time you are using the same method. This makes it not practical for you. So just select tricks that suit you. Secondly you will think the vanishing card is weak because you will probably work it out quickly if you saw it working. How well can you handle a crowd, when you spot the 'concept' is going wrong do you have the confidence to 'fix' things without breaking the flow of the performance.

Review from the workers view

If you table hop you have a great selection of effects, instant reset, always ready to go. You will have great audience managment skills so no problem. For me the pickpocket routine is a gem and i will be putting this to use soon. You can even borrow a deck of cards.

So to finish it is a good DVD, you need good skills in observation, a little psychology. Most people will find this interesting, but be prepared to say 'is this really new?' when you see bits of the concept.

Sorry if this review reads strange but it has been so hard to create, never has a DVD divided my own view so much. Watch the demo and see what you think.

Overall

8/10 for workers

7/10 for non-workers
