Body Language - Charles Gauci

Postby roman59 » Oct 6th, '03, 16:26

Effect

This is Charles Gaucis improvement on Max Maven's Kurotsuke. It is one of my favorite effects. because you can perform it close-up, table-hopping, cabaret or on the largest stage. It is also a great impromptu effect.
It resets immediately.

Four gold balls and one black ball are placed in a bag. Five spectators in turn reach into the bag and take out one ball each. Nobody knows which colour ball they are holding.
One by one the performer eliminates the gold balls and successfully locates the person who is holding the black ball.

Each spectator holds the bag as they take out a ball. There is no palming. Everything can be examined, balls and bag. The bags are beautifully made from top quality materials and so are the balls. A top professional effect with entertaining patter.

This again is so simple but the method is so devious!

Everything can be examined before & after the effect, it packs small yet plays so big, once you know the method you will kick yourself.

No peeking, no pumping just 100% success each time you do this.

Charles Gauci really hit gold when he came up with this.

Cheers

ah yes. I remember you talking about it now.

Yes it sounds really excellent. You can really play up the Derren Brown esque Psychology aspect with this one as well, eliminating them one by one. Maybe get them to say "Black Gold" - and tell them they give it away (ie like the DB counting from 1-6).

I think the reason that this and "eye to eye" work so well is that it is really totally believable that we do unintentionally give something away, albeit body language or quiver to the voice, or maybe a blink of an eye.

With these effects we aren't trying to convice someone we are doing magic. We are just saying something everyone suspects anyway, that we are just very clever buggers and can read body language.

It uses the "Nothing to Declare" principle. That is to say - everyone (well me anyway) that walks through the "nothing to declare" area, feels really guilty anyway - even when we have nothing to declare - and we are convinced that the Customs officer is going to spot the guilt at any moment and call us over.

excellent tricks. Thanks for the review.

There's quite a good video presentation of this effect as well.

Sounds excellent.

I like the idea of reading body language, and indeed - some of the subtleties on the Devils Picturebook tape are enhanced amazingly by Derren making references to reading throat movement, eye movement and the like.

It's a charming perception - and It's something I think can be used with a lot of mentalism routines to correctly place the role of the performer as a skilled and learned magician - whatever the method the REAL trick employs.

How much does it cost and where can you get it from? It sounds a lot like a £5 trick we stock at Studio 9 where six spectators take a marble from a bag and you know instantly which one has the steel BB rather than a normal glass marble.

Check out: http://www.charlesgauci.com, the price is a bit higher than the one you refer to but the results might be similar!

(Strangely, the original link didn't work - try the above instead!)

Nickj

Its available from Alakazam or direct from Charles Gauci from memory its £60.00.
The method is so much more cleaner than the one you mention with the marbles, everything is examinable before & after there really is nothing to hide & there is no holding back as in the Maven method.

Talking to Charles his method fooled Max Maven when he performed it at the magic castle on two occasions.

Hope this helps

Hopefully I will see you at the Ipswich convention in a couple of weeks?
Cheers

Hey Roman I was just checking out this trick on Charles Gauci's site and what do you know, it states ref. the eye to eye trick and others the following:

Here are some of Charles's favorite effects...... you will be able to perform these effects within 5 minutes of reading the instructions.

Anyhow thanks for the review on this one as it looks like a definite one to add to my wish list.

Touche Mr Toad!

But seriously if you can get hold of Mr Gaucis lecture notes there is a stunning no nmemonic memorized deck routine that can be learnt in 15 minutes, for £10.00 they are an absolute bargain.

I was lucky enough to see him Lecture 2 weeks ago here in Madrid. If you already own the deluxe version of eye to eye with the Silver Medalion there is a great handling where you can use the same gimmick used in Body Language to really fool your audience.

FYI: There is a version of Body language available from MagicMax called the Dark Stone for $26,99 - same method but not as clean as Gauci's Body Language

Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to make the Ipswich convention as I am off to the lake district for a weekend walking. Feel free to go and look at the studio9 stall though, the boss won't be there (off somewhere as usual, probably on a cruise ship) but his wife and mother in law probably will!

Was I dreaming or did I see Charles doing this body language routine, but not allowing anyone to look at the ball in their hand, until he had named them as not having the black ball? If so seems to go against the whole body language thing??

Roman, if I can get hold of the notes you refer to I certainly will.

If this is the one with the hat (!) then it's a good un! My miniaturised, stock it in the pocket version is just about ready, uses a matchbox, a small bag as used for marbles, small coloured pom-poms, and will use paper hat out of Christmas Cracker - availability on last item is 'in about 8 day's' time!

Eye to Eye is good, though much better f you have long hair or ware a hat or something. Other than that better for a one on one than a group.
