Stickman Sam: A Review

Postby Ed » Nov 23rd, '06, 22:55

Hey guys here is another review from me, this time the review will be for the trick Stickman Sam, By: mark mason. so here it is.

EFFECT: ANY card is freely selected and signed on the face, and then lost in the deck. Visibly draw a large stickman on the back of any card, YOU REALLY DRAW THE STICKMAN. The stickman jumps off the back of the card onto another card several times. The stickman is cut into the center of the deck only to jump back up to the top! Without cover, etc the stickman VISUALLY jumps off the top card and dives down into the deck! The deck is spread and the stickman is on the back of a card in the centre of the deck. This is their signed selected card!

GIMMICK: This trick does come with a gimmick, it is pretty well made, but it will break eventually, depending on how rough you are with the gimmick, and how many times you perform the effect, but know need to worry because in the instructions it tells you how to fix the gimmick, I've had this trick for about 6 months now, and the gimmick hasn't broken yet, (so im still crossing my fingers for it not to break.) It will be a pain in the butt though to fix the gimmick, I cant go into details of why becasue that would be exposure, but it is fixable. Also, the spectators wont be able to see the gimmicked card, becasue they do see it for a few seconds. I was worried that they might see it but they didnt and I have performed this effect alot, so the gimmick is pretty well hiden. So I give the gimmick a 8/10 only becasue of the gimmick will break eventually, and it will be a pain in the butt to fix.

DVD: I liked the DVD alot. How the DVD is layed out is this, they have the performance, and then the explanation, and then the bonus tips. I own alot of mark mason effects, and he always does a great job of explaining the effect thourly. The explanation of the trick is very clear, and prcise. Mark mason goes through every step of the effect so you understand clearly of how it should be done. (good job mark mason!) The bonus tips are pretty cool also, he gives you some good tips on how to make the trick look better, and run more smoothly. So I give the DVD a 10/10.

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: This trick also comes with written instructions on how to do the trick so its a double bonus! The written instructions are okay, I did get confused a little bit, but not to much. The written instructions does go through every step of the effect which is a good thing, and also at the end of the instuctions it tells you how to fix the gimmick if it were to break. So thats a good thing also. I give the written instuctions a 9/10, only becasue the instructions are a little confusing.

SETUP: There is a setup invovled, which takes about 6 seconds. And after you perform the effect, you will have to reset the trick which will take about another 6 seconds, so this is kinda ok for strolling magic or if your a table hopping magician. I give the set up a 10/10 because there isnt alot of setup.

METHOD: Okay the method of the trick is pretty cool. I did however catch on, on part of the trick, but then I was fooled at the end when the stickman appeard back ontop of the deck when they cut him in the middle and when he visually under no cover dissaperad from the top card and jumped into the middle of the deck on one card which was the chosen card. You will have to pratice a while, to make the trick look convincing, especially the part when the stickman jumps from the back of a card to another card several times. It its very easy to do, but also there is some timing involved to make it look like it jumped from card to card, and thats all im saying before I expose the trick. Other than the beginning part, the trick is super easy to do, and at the end when the stickman visually jumps from the back of a card into the middle of the deck, the spectators just love that part, and so do I because it looks so magical. The method is a very good method, and the trick is very easy to perform with some practice. I give the method a 10/10 because of the fact that the trick is easy to do with no hard sleights.

Now I will have some pros and cons about this effect:

PROS:
its easy to perform
its very visual
the spectator can keep their card with the stickman on it at the end
not alot of setup
DVD is very good
Written instuctions explains well

CONS:
the gimmick will break eventually
you will go throug a deck like its nothing when practicing

OVERALL: Overall, this trick is super visual, and very easy to perform. The part that I like best is at the end when the stickman jumps on their signed card, and they can keep the card with the stickman on the back of it. Like I said before, the tirck is easy to perform, and the DVD and the written instuctions are well planned out, in which they both explain everything in great detail.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
