Kevin Parker's Psynpe
Effect: The magician, without even touching the cards, reveals the card that was peaked at while his back was turned!
Method: The method is simple and anyone, with very minimal practice, will be able to perform this trick. The spectator cannot really catch how the trick works because there are really no moves.
Setup: Yes, there is a set-up. It will take you a while the first time but after that you're set to go for a while. I can now set-up in 5 minutes, so it's not that hard.
Teaching: Kevin teaches very thoroughly and gives you three presentation methods for performing psynpe. Also there are five or six live street performances of Kevin performing this, to help in teaching.
Video Quality: The quality of his instructional video has increased and looks a lot more professional than some of his other products. It is by no means HD but as long as it teaches the effect then it doesn't really matter.
Price: It is $17 which does seem a bit high, but overall I think that (to me) it was worth it. The reactions I have gotten from this are great.
Personal Thoughts: I have performed this a lot and I have to say I am impressed with it. When I first got it I was disappointed because I already knew a similar method, but using the presentation that Kevin gives I have gotten reactions far better than what I had expected.
One of my friends who is always asking me to do a trick and is one of the most skeptical of my "followers" said it was the coolest thing he has seen me do. I think the reason for this is he just couldn't find a logical explanation to how it worked. With all my other card tricks he knew there were certain sleights or misdirection that made it work, but when I showed him this I had my back turned and he didn't even pick out a card all he did was peek at the corner of it and somehow, I knew it. I think it is the pure fairness of the trick that makes the impact on the spectators.
Having said all that, this trick will not be everyone's favorite. I recommend it to a beginner and intermediate magician. Someone who has been in magic a while might already know how the trick works. Having said that...I have been in magic for 7 years and I subconsciously knew how the trick worked and I still like the trick. So basically if it appeals to your style, then get it. If you don't like how it looks in the demo, then don't get it. You have to think about what it looks like to your spectators, not so much what it looks like to you.
Pros:
-It is unexplainable to the spectator
-the magician doesn't even touch the deck
-can be repeated immediately
-No Gimmicks
-No slight of hand
Cons:
-It may not work if your spectator doesn't obey your instructions
-is not impromptu
-the price is a bit high
Overall: I give this an 8/10.
