Review

I got the two volume set but so far have only worked on volume 1 so a volume 2 review will come when I've gone through that.

The first thing that disapointed me when I first put this disk in and played it was that it was in black and white. I believe that the disk is an American format disk and doesn't play properly on my player. This is just a minor point really, as the disc was still watchable.

Contained on the disk is 2 performances by Tabary and the tutorials. Every time I see his routine, it amazes me and the performances on the disk did just that.

In the tutorial he goes over every single detail very well. His accent can make things hard to understand and he seems to do everything in the wrong hands but you soon get used to these points.

He teaches each step of the routine brilliantly, his explainations are at a good pace and he shows you the moves from different angles.

The thing that I love is that it would be very easy to chop and change the routine to make it your own, each of the steps could be performs as tricks in their own right and many could be left out or indeed others could be added very easily if you were to want to alter your performance length.

All in all, this a very good and well thought out routine and his methods are brilliant. It will take some work to perfect but that's time well worth spent.

Overall

7/10 (just let down by the fact that the DVD is american format)

I have the original videos (PAL) and they're in colour.
Must be a format/machine problem.

When Tabary performed this on "World's Greatest Magic" he missed out one or two sections (the second 'travelling ends').
Easy to tailor this routine for the occasion.

For the black and white problem. It could be for one of these reasons:

Your TV is quite old, or your DVD player is quite old.
The cable is not a true RGB scart cable.
The scart cable is in the wrong scart socket in the TV, if there's other inputs try it in there.
Your DVD player may not be set to output in NTSC.

Or you could copy the DVD on your PC and convert it to PAL in the process.

It's a great routine but not as interchangeable with other rope routines as you mnay think - this is because the Tabary routine uses diferent rope lengths and much of his sleights happen in the opposite hands to other rope sleights. However, with patience this CAN be worked out.

I recommend Fibre Optics, Flips rope routine and Jahn Gallos ring and rope and then try Daryls encyclopedia of rope magic.

No problem

I'd say that from a magicians perspective, Tabary is always the rope routine that gets the first mention and is perhaps the most satisfying to learn as it is one of the most difficult ones, because of the rope lengths, and understanding Tabary's accent  .

From a lay person's perspective, I'd say that Fibre Optics is the best as it't this one that always gets me the most gasps from an audience and it's much much easier to intergate with other pieces from Flip, Gallos and Daryl's collections.

My personal preference for Fibre Optics is to start and end with Joe Riding's cut and restored routine so I begin and end with a single piece of rope with most of Fibre Optics performed in the middle.

However, just one of these titles will get you bye as some impressive rope magic unless like me, you're really into your ropes and want to specialise.
