Well, I'm not attacking or flaming anyone. I can see the sense behind what Mandrake and Bananafish are saying (and Bananafish points out that it's a reasonable discussion worth having) but I think the argument tips the scales too far in the favour of the dealers and manufacturers.

If you given a demo of a trick at a magic shop you are not generally given even a hint towards the secret until you hand over some hard cash.

No circles: that's the bit that's wrong. If no-one knows what they're buying then people inevitably end up buying things that - once they realise what it actually is - they don't actually want. This is good for the retailers, but it's bad for the consumers. Most magicians take the attitude that this is the way it should be, because anything else is exposing secrets. It seems to me that the turkeys are voting for Christmas.

As you point out this secrecy is especially redundant for this effect since even if you know every detail you aren't going to be making it yourself.

Not strictly true. It is MORE than possible to construct this yourself, and a few of the edited posts on here explicitly described how, in a round-about way.

Which is why perhaps this discussion seems out of context.

I'm all for the 'know what you're buying' idea with retail, but I think magic is very similar to prophylactics when it comes to a 'try before you buy' policy. It just ain't happening.

A good, structured and objective review of the effect is worth much more than the biased advertising blurb. And that's what we get on here.

There is absolutely no way that exposure, tipping or nodding will be tolerated.

Rules are rules and I wouldn't condone breaking them. I'm not sure what it's got to do with prehistoric flying reptiles though.

In some forums it's not even on to talk about the rules so it's nice that this wasn't stomped on.

Oh dear ID it would appear that you have fallen of the wagon and are on the CUPS again.

But yeah getting back on track this trick looks great, I think I'll be ordering it when I get paid next week. In a funny kind of way I think all the arging and discusions on this thread has kept me reading this and has influenced me to buy this thing.

Which just goes to show that there is no such thing as bad publicity

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Oh dear... you've got a serious CUPS case going on there. In the beginning you admitted having it and that's a good start, but now... :? You need to address your problem. You should start a new association: AC (Anonymous CUPSers)

bangon questions

Postby slewis » May 7th, '07, 03:08

I have a few questions about BANGON.

(1) The comments on "shelf life" mentioned that the envelope could wear out. Obviously, it is gimmicked. If it wears out, would it be difficult to reconstruct it, once you know the working?
(2) The same question for the cards that are revealed. From the previous answers, it appears that they are gimmicked as well. Could they be easily replaced?
(3) What about reset time? Could you do it at different tables?
(4) Do you need to be wearing a jacket?

slewis...

An introduction would have been nice before posting, however, here's the answers you seek.

1. The envelopes are envelopes. They are supplied as an afterthought by the producers. Ergo, you can replace if you 'wear them out'.

2. There are no 'gimmick' cards in the deck

3. Reset is instant.

4. Is a jacket really the only item of clothing you wear with a pocket in?

Seems you were misinformed about this effect.

This endless thread... and endless fishing... and endless disbelieve... just proofs how hit hard-strong effect Bang On really is.

I bought a red bicycle deck a few months ago, I've used it a lot for the ambitious card routine, but now the deck is worn out. I didn't realise it before, but according to slewis, the deck must be gimmicked. Wow... I have to thank him for pointing this out, because I just thought it was a deck of 52 cards and 2 jokers, but as it wore out, it's gimmicked!

And this endless question: Do you need to be wearing a jacket?
You know what, you could do this wearing only a speedo and goggles!
Then you could produce the thought-of-card out of your sports bag and keep on with your life as a happy person... :)

...and I ditto seige's comment about introduction first.

I had the thought of combining this with Eddie Joseph's Premonition or Ted Lesley's Promonition (an updated version of the Eddie Joseph original). Marc provides a sort of way to do it, but the premonition would look as follows:

the participant names a card, you hand him a deck and ask him to count the cards and look for his card. He gets to 51 and cannot find his card. You remove his card from your wallet.

Nice...no, really nice!

That sounds really sweet, DrTodd.
Any situation where you can astonish your participant is a beauty.
I am neither familiar with Eddie Joseph's Premonition nor Ted Lesley's, but as you discribe it it sounds very interesting and really nice.

Wow. Seems like this effect has caused a lot of debats among us magicians. I've been thinking about getting this for a few weeks now and have not been put off by it reading this forum debate. I have no idea how this effect works but I do know I am getting as soon I get my next pay-packet. Looks like a true miracle.

They do it without the Bang On finish, but I thought it would be good.

Trickshop sell Eddie Joseph's version for $4.95 download.
