Little Smoke

Postby Julian » May 10th, '07, 09:59

OK, so my first review and in fact my first contribution to the board....so go easy on me :P

The Effect
Smoke appears from the magicians fingertips at any time, i.e. card tricks, coin vanishes, etc

Cost
£9.99 from Merchant Of Magic www.magicshop.co.uk
http://www.magicshop.co.uk/little-smoke-p-1056.html

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1 - Minimal set up and very easy to produce smoke once it is done.

Review

I actually recieved this as a free gift when I bought some shells from MoM. I did have some 'smoke' (and I use that word very lightly!) that I bought from a magic shop before which all I can describe as stringy and a complete waste of time!

At first when i first opened the packet and wondered if I had ended up down the same route again and having found out how much it cost I wondered exactly what it was and if it was worth the money(if I had paid for it).

Reading the instructions proved that preparation and setup was extremely simple. The gimmick is very easy to prepare and although quantities given look small at first, you do not need very much to produce the effect.

There is a small amount of initial mucking about but then loading the gimmick for use takes literally a second and you will look completely clean no matter how hard you are scrutised by someone. The only downside is that there is a slight odour once the smoke has been produced that your audience may notice if they sit too close but you can probably explain this away. Again, once effect is done you are clean and can produce smoke again if required without reloading the gimmick.

Pros
Produces excellent quality smoke
Quick setup
Start and end 'visually' clean
Vastly cheaper than devices such as Smoke 2000.

Cons
Sometimes leaves slight residual odour.

Overall
8/10 Nice surprise to recieve as a free gift, you would just have to work out how to incorporate into your routines.

Tell me something.. does the packet say ' Little Smoke ' or does it say ' Magic Smoke ' ??

The difference is quite radical in terms of what you receive.

HI ID

I checked when I got home last night and it does in fact say Magic Smoke - which has confused the hell of out me now as they dont sell it the website.

Watching the demo video the presentation video is exactly the same as Magic Smoke.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic5559.p ... ight=smoke

check out that thread.. I got Magic Smoke through and its not the same as little smoke. You get a lot less and it is a rip-off copy apparantly.

Might be worth emailing Magic Shop as they may not know this.

Let me know how you get on as I never got a reply when I emailed them about it.

The fact that they're giving it away, when they don't even sell it, leads me to believe they already know about it.

well thats what I thought when I received it as a free gift, but as they do sell 'Little Smoke' on their site and Julian advised he actually received Magic Smoke concerns me.

I havehad no replies from the emails I have sent but have not pushed it only due to the fact I didnt pay for it.

I have the Little Smoke version.

I think I can give away most of how this works because no one can duplicate it, so I'm not giving away the secret. Mods will no doubt edit if I am out of order.

Your purchase is a small sheet of paper impregnated with the desirable stuff which needs burning before you can use it. You cut a bit off with scissors and burn it with a lighter. I'm not revealling the secret because I don't know it.

You then put it on 2 parts of your body and when you rub them together you get real genuine smoke. Fingers or whatever your immagination comes up with. However, if you are playing with cards you will transfer a detrius to the cards from your fingers unless you go to the loo and wash your hands.

Its very good, and does what it says, but it smells and it lingers on your fingers.

Also, there's something about the smell... I dunno... really chemically... I'm sure it's safe if they're allowed to sell it, but I haven't ordered any more, even the official version - the idea of rubbing this stuff into my skin on a regular basis makes me uneasy :?

Hey Farlsborough this effect sounds very much like a science
experiment I've seen else where.
A common item is burned to leave a orange/brown
goo on a metal surface. When rubbed off with a single wipe of a finger
then the fingers rubbed together an amazing amount off smoke is
seen rising from the finger tips.
The smell of the compound is very nasty ( harsh chemical )
before during and after the performance.

Every place I have seen this carries a huge warning about not breathing in any fumes or smoke and about putting your fingers anywhere near your mouth and eyes.

Does any of the effects for sale say much about the safety aspect ?
or is this going to join "Warning" on the too risky to sell shelf

I would say this is very similar to that leviticus! As in, identical! I wouldn't say the smell is "very nasty", but it's certainly an odd, pungent smell... I actually found myself smelling it over and over again to remind myself what it was like, because it's an odd smell that I hadn't come across before... yes, chemically, but it some ways it had a kind of "cleaness" or "sterility", a bit like bleach - but not bleach!

There are a few small warnings but I'm not sure they stress them enough... I always worry a bit with magic products, because the audience is relatively small, and out of that, not many people will necessarily pay much attention to side effects etc. If it was something that everybody bought or owned, I'd be fairly sure that tests would have been rigorous and if there was a safety issue it would have been picked up promptly... I can just imagine this sort of thing going un-noticed for ages, and in 20 years there's a mysterious spate of magicians reporting skin cancer in their fingers...!

I don't want to damage sales for Little Smoke here - I'm sure they've checked the safety and given adequate warning, this is just me being silly and superstitious

smoke

Postby Trickyfied » May 23rd, '07, 15:04

Out of interest with magic smoke and little smoke, how long can you leave it in place before producing smoke? Do you need to use it staight away?
