Hopping Half Sun and Moon observations

Postby joss » Jun 3rd, '07, 14:03

I received my very first trick yesterday. Though I'm sure they have been reviewed many times, I'd like to add a few observations from a beginners point of view.

I bought a Hopping Half Sun and Moon set. Cost: £24.99 from Magicbox. You get a two pence and ten pence piece. The quality is very good, even close up they look convincing, especially the two pence, because it has a flat rim so you can't see any sign of anything out of the ordinary. They come complete with some instructions that explain a single routine to get you started.

I was a bit dismayed at the noise they made when trying to manipulate them in my hand though. For a beginner to coin magic I'd say that the hardest thing to master, is keeping movements flowing but at the same time trying not to produce any tell-tale clinking sounds.

I have remedied this by lining the bottom with some masking tape. All you need to do is stick some tape over the working side and press it down firmly, trim it down to the inside bottom rim using an art knife or Stanley blade. Shiny sticky tape is not so good as it creates suction that reduces performance.

All in all I'd say they're good value and a perfect trick for someone like me to cut their teeth on.

They can be worked silently without any masking.
I've seen this come with different instructions before.
Did your instructions not explain "the move"?

No reference to 'the move'. The instructions just say try not to make any noise when performing the trick.
I also have Bobo's book on order, which will no doubt explain it to me.

The other thing to consider is that when performing to others, the use of patter will disguise any noise that is produced but as stated, with practice you shouldn't be getting much noise, if any to worry about anyway.

Thanks for the advise. I've been practicing and am just starting to get to grips with it.

I've also been watching some videos of coin tricks, especially coin box magic. Some of the magicians actually make quite a lot of coin noise throughout their routine. It only makes the trick more confusing rather than give any clue as to what is going on.

I've compiled a small list of other coin gimmicks I am considering buying.

at the risk of repeating myself you get two of the most important utility coins in magic which should get you thinking here are two examples of things you can do, i'llleave you to work out which utility is used for which.

1) coins across.
2) 2p to 10p instant change by closing my hand.
 8)

Hopping Half Expanded Shell

Best Coin Set in Magic with a TRUE Expanded Half Dollar!

Show both sides of an English penny and a Half dollar.
Now remove the Half dollar from your hand and place it in your pocket.
When you open your hands, both coins are still there.
This time you remove the English penny, both coins are still in your hand.
Finally, you remove the English penny and place it in your pocket this time.
When you open your hands, both coins have VANISHED!
Precision crafted coins do the magic!
Comes with Leather Pouch!

dificulty 1, you need to remember a sequence, one additional coin needed.

Iv'e tacked this on to the hopping half review because its the same but with an expanded shell for tricks like coins across.
they were out of stock when i ordered the tango version so they sent me the sassco version instead, which dosn't come with a leather wallet but thats a minor niggle.
the sassco quality is very good and if your interested in getting an expanded shell then this is worth getting for the extra special coins.

You need to start with both coins in your left hand, that way if there is any noise, it won't raise any suspicion. With practice doing the move with your left thumb, you can take the first s---l out of the left hand and put it in your pocket. Repeat and follow routine instructions. Don't worry about the noise.

Practice, practice, practice and when you think you have it down practice some more. Then You should be able to do it without making a sound.
