"3rd Degree Burn - Jason Palter" at work?!

Postby Danzoe21 » Jun 11th, '07, 23:12

Just thought it was worth letting you know of a little story I've had with this effect. I'll make it short and sweet! Firstly I bought it about 4 months back, from world of magic, great price etc. Anyway it arrived, I opened it, looked at the gimmick in an awkward silence, watched the dvd, got frustrated, annoyed at the complexity, and thought it was awful. I felt to much memory skill was needed to perform it, and it was simply impossible for the avergage person to memorize, and use the gimmick effectively. It went straight under my bed, never to be used again. I felt cheated, and thought about trying to sell it many times.... until last week...
I was having a rummage through my stacks of magic 10 minutes before I had to leave for work when I came across it and thought, shall I give it one more try? I put it in position, stood in front of the mirror, gave it one go, and the memories came flooding back, "yep rubbish" I thought.
I left for work with the gimmick left in my pocket, forgot about it. I work as a shelf stacker in focus DIY, and so began my standing quietly bored routine in the aisles which would last for hours and hours. I realised I had the gimmick in my pocket, and decided to try again, whilst stacking, seeing If I could memorize what I needed to achieve the effect soon as I had nothing else to do, and the shop was empty. I tried again, and again, annd again, and so on. I kept repeating, and trying different methods, learning chunks of the gimmick hour by hour. I became devoted to learning it off by heart in my work shift, not even bothering to stack shelves, jusst pretending whilst I practiced on my own. I must have fiddled with it and practiced for about 4 hours, with the odd customer looking at me strangly fidding with my hands in my pocket talking to thin air lol. I think they got worried when kids walked past, but i carried on learning anyway. I was getting to love the effect, the more I got used to the gimmick, the more I pratciced, and I realised this was what I should have done when I recieved the trick, instead of expecting to be able to do it straight away. by the time I walked out of those doors the other night I could have performed that routine to anyone perfectly , and producing blisters on any of my fingers, of the number and suit ,of any of the 52 cards, that they could of thought of. I now adore the effect, have tried it a few times, and the reactions are amazing when you show them blisters on your fingers of the card they thought of.
I just thought it was an inspiring story to tell anyone that cares, because it proves that practice really does make perfect (especially if you have absolutely nothing else to do!) , and that you should never dismiss a trick unless you have fully practiced for at least a few hours non stop for a couple of days. I will be taking many gimmicks with me from now on to work, and practicing in the aisles, as it is quiet and in a way it is now like a scheduled magic practice time for me. If anyone else practices at thier work place, I would like yto hear your stories, and I advise people to try it, it works!

p.s I apologise to anyone I offended by calling the effect rubbish earlier on, as i said I now thinks its top quality by mr palter, i was just rubbish lol

Danzoe - an absolutely wonderful story mate, and the perfect illustation of what many of us have to repeat, time and again to younger or newer students; those who have been brainwashed by E, Penguin and the other 'mass-marketeers', into thinking a hefty purchase and 10 minutes of their time will make them a "spectator-slaying master magician".

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been becoming somewhat disillusioned (bad pun!) with the amount of 'Professional Newbie' posts, that have been flooding TalkMagic.

Finally though! A really wonderful, re-affirming story, from somebody new to magic, who's worked it out for themselves.

Without wanting to sound condescending, I'm utterly THRILLED for you, bud - I really am, and I'm sure that - with this experience behind you - you'll go on to perfect every effect that you want to present :D

This is the sort of post that could do with being stickied in the beginners section!

More like this please

This made me laugh

Great story that. Reminds me of when I would dismiss sleights as I thought they would never work. But the more you find yourself in the situation where that sleight would be perfect as the angles and whatnot are just right, so now I don't dismiss ANYTHING without giving it a least a little but of my time and practice it, then you start making it look smoother, faster and when it all slots in, it's just a great feeling.

Love that satisfied feeling you get when you've got it, never fails to cheer me up :D

I agree the feeling I had when I knew I could use that gimmick with one hand behind my back, blindfolded, jumping up and down on the spot, with flippers on, and all while stacking shelves made me feel invincible lol. Its so true, I have learnt that eluusionist, penguin, and all magic sites, try to hype up the idea that if i buy that trick, 10 mins and I'll be a miracle worker, and the next blaine, it just dont happen. Like I said i will practice all my tricks like this from now on, relentlessly for hours until signs of improvement show. If after a few days of solid practice I still feel its a weak effect, then I will dismiss it.
And robstanley thanks for your comments, they were much appreciated. I will continue to post my thoughts and stories more, as I often just read all your posts!

nice story and truly inspiring

I have taken to practicing coin work whilst I am "working", practicing palms and trying to go about my daily business of surfing the net and chatting on msn whilst keeping coins concealed. It seems a great idea and affords me plenty more practice time. I have thought about practicing my card stuff at work but it's just not possible as people are literaly a few feet away from me, including my boss, but with coins I find I can practice all day long without anyone saying a word. It just looks like I'm fiddling with coins (until I stick one up my nose)
