Price:£34.99

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

I'd give it a solid 2. Yet there are sleights but I dont even know if you can call these moves sleights their simple. The easiest move is the most effective and a well known handling technique by all magicians, however even if you are not one - its easy! Most moves are a 1 in difficulty, however there are two moves which are around a 2-3, but you do not have to include them in the routine, they just look really good.

Review
Right, when I saw the demo video (link above) for this trick I had to have it. I deal with street magic and close up magic mostly, and this looked perfect for walk around because it uses a common object - a lighter. What you see on the dvd is exactly what you get. The dvd came through the post 2 days after ordering from magicshop.co.uk (great sevice), and as soon as I opened it I didnt understand how the effect could be achieved? I was expecting a really complicated little lighter gadget, but without revealing much, its fairly simple. You are supplied with 3 gimmick lighters. Which are good in quality. I put in the dvd to get straight to the teaching to understand how I could pull off this AMAZING visual logo jumping performance. All I can say is it is very very clever, and ohh so easy, I had the first move down in seconds, and as I said it is the most visual. He teaches you many different ways of making the logo jump and dissappear, rubs, taps, blink effects, spinning disolves etc. It all looks so good and again is really easy. This is the first trick I have bought in a long time (since TORN) that when I do it in front of the mirror, I am still shocked at how good it looks, and how clean it is. He teaches all the patter aswell. I love this trick and have already done it to all my family (not the whole routine), but most of it, and they simply cannot comprehend how its possible, I had them on their knees trying to look for strings lol. There are two cilmaxes int he trick aswel, one where you place the lighter in their hand and get them to close their hand, open it and the logo has disappeared or reappered, whichever you want! Its so effective and works on everyone. The last climax, if you watch the demo is when one lighter becomes two, with a funny twist. I havent managed to slip this is yet, because I need practice, but it will top the whole thing off, and leave them even more confused and baffled than they already are...

Pro's
Very visual!
Start clean, end clean
Gimmicks quality
Very easy
Good teaching

Cons:
His french accent can be a bit hard to follow at some points on the dvd
You'll be shocked at the simplicity of it!
Bit high in price

Overall
10/10 - I personally love it, worth every penny for me!

The video makes it look like fancy version of the old color changing knife but for a much heftier price.

It rocks, I have to have it!

It's a great trick to approach some people smoking at a venue....

I got this a while back and have to say its one of my faves - i very rarely leave the house without them.

I have modified the routine ever so slightly, and put a major emphasis on that 3rd lighter - gets a fantastic response every time.

The only niggle I have now, is that the logo's are starting to wear and cant find anywhere that supplies replacements - have looked at the website provided in the box (if you dont have lighters please visit...) and still no joy.

Am thinking about trying to make my own.

I give it 10 out of 10 also, and say that is 100% worth every penny.

NB - as a smoker, i often get asked for a lighter - and often use this as my intro - "I only have one which doesnt work...unless...." you get the idea.

Well, this trick rocks. But there are no gimmicks really, just props.

The method came quite naturally to me and I've only done the basic move so far but it seems to work exceptionally well.

You are mostly paying for the DVD and a little for prop.

In fact, you can find these lighters if you look hard enough. I picked up a lighter like this in Mexico. So, if the imprint wears off, you can find substitute lighter. However, the lighters supplied are *ideal* for this trick.

The only downside is I'm going travelling next year and would love to take this with me to perform in Oz, but airport security won't let me.

Me and the ex used to buy blank lighters and paint them and put transfers on em etc to sell at club nights we were involved in. We used to give them about 3 or 4 coats of spray lacquer to ensure the artwork stayed on for longer. Perhaps you could try this? BUT do make sure they dry fully between coats and you apply it evenly else you'll end up with a horribly sticky lighter. We had the advantage of them being clipper lighters so drilled a small hole in the protruding side for strings which we attached to them for sale. Said strings facilitated the spraying process as they copuld be suspended and sprayed and allowed to be left hanging whilst drying. But I'm sure where there's a will there's a way so if it helps, try it!!

I was in Davenports yesterday and the young chap behind the counter performed this for me. I was quite impressed with the routine and the way it involves the spectator. However, his set of lighters looked quite old and the colour from the logo had worn away completely. This is not what I would expect from something that costs in the region of £35 - not exactly cheap. Having said that, No Smoking is available from World Magic Shop for £24.99.

I am considering purchasing this I think it's quite topical at the moment, with the smoking ban coming in shortly. But I think they should supply replacement lighters at a nominal price.

EDIT: I can't read French, but it would appear that replacement lighters are available from Close-Up-Magic for 20 Euros plus 5 Euros p&p.

Is that not just for the DVD though, it doesn't say you get the lighters included?

Read down to the third paragraph...

"Comes complete with the lighters you need to perform the routine..."

That is easily the best price I have seen it for.

Problems with the move

Postby kristallmagier » Jul 8th, '11, 10:16

Hi there,

I bought the trick and have for three weeks tried to do the move, but it just does not work. My fingers just slip along the plastic without turning the lighter. It's maddening. If I lick my fingers, it works for about 30 seconds, afterwards it's back to square one. And I can't very well lick my fingers in front of an audience, can I?

Now, I understand that the move is supposed to be totally easy. So I do not know what is wrong. I even tried black spray-on rubber on the lighter to give it more friction, but it still does not work.

Does anyone have any ideas what to to? Other lighters whose form is better suited, something else that is inconspicuous yet makes the grip better?

This routine is awesome. One of my favorites. I have a similar routine with different lighters. One tip I have to credit one of my mates for is to get a small rubber band (one of the ones that goes around a gimmick coin will work well) and put this on the lighter till you have mastered to move.

Then remove it and in time you should have it nailed.
