Magicians Wax - Magic City

Postby Shabadarniggadoo » May 19th, '07, 16:02

Magicians wax is used in a variety of tricks, and plays an important roll in magic, not so much these days, with all these nifty gimmicks that do all the work them selves.

I recently puchased some of the top end wax from a magic retailer. Which to my dissapointment didn't do the job I wished, skin to wax adhesion left something to me desired, yet after handling or kneading the wax object to wax adhesion was reasonable, for use in coin magic the wax was vitually useless, but for cards and fabric it was reasonable.

I strongly suggest puchasing a bee's wax candle and using wax from it as an alternative, it's pliable from the start and will stick most things again and again, but over all, for one off adhesions use sellotape sticky dots, can't be "made" very easily by spectators and very strong bond but easy to remove, available in a series of strenghts.
Bluetac or double sided tape I have also found to be ok.

(ratings take into account strength, durability, and also discreetness)

Magicians wax - 3/10
Bee's wax - 6/10
Sticky dots - 8/10
Double sided tape - 7/10
Blu tac - 4/10

Did I just see Magicians wax compared with blu tac. Has Seige by name sage by nature (like what I did there?) says horses for courses.

Some tricks work better with glue dots, some with wax.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

OK - you missed the most obvious and cheapest, easy to come by type of wax!

So what about ear wax?

I couldn't see using the ear wax.... but will definitely try the bees wax. Found that the wax I have been using changes color from handling makes it more visible. But I personally prefer using wax than tape.

i use a lot of wax and i have found the greatest is dental wax. it's used for kids with braces. very workable and will stick great to alot of things. also you cant get it in mint flavor so your coins tast good too. lol

Chri is right about dental wax.Dental wax is really good and it is soft, tacky and nearly transparent. You can't go wrong with it and you can ask a dentist for a sample and they usually will give you some. Most magicians wax is hard and the color is yellow. Not good at all. Why magic shops sell this useless stuff is annoying. The wax ring that goes on the bottom of a toilet to seal it is soft and tacky. It will do the job if you don't mind the color of it.
Cheers

Another option is the wax used for earplugs. Tony Binarelli uses an Italian brand in prefence to 'proper' magicians' wax, although I don't know if something similar is available in the UK. You can definitely get wax earplugs, but they might not do the trick!

Wax earplugs tend to be supplied with cotton wool interwover in them. I've heard the 'get some wax earplugs' many moons back, and I went to great lengths to get some.

What you actually get are wax balls which are fibrous. Like I said, they are interwoven with cotton wool.

And the wax itself is VERY soft... more like the Ammar wax.

They're pretty much unusable.

Unless your other-half snores ;)

The earplugs I found didn't seem to have any cotton in them, but didn't seem that great for use as magicians' wax. However, I didn't exactly carry out a full survey (in fact, the earplugs were bought to be used as earplugs), so maybe there's a brand that does the trick somewhere.

It's probably useful to know about as an emergency resource. I'd certainly buy the 'proper' wax if I wanted to do an effect requiring it.

Which reminds me...I never did try the Michael Ammar wax I bought.

good stuff 4 me

I bought some from Penguinmagic.com. It works great w/ IT, but I wouldn`t reccomend putting it on cards. It leaves a white residue behind every darn time. :x
