Job Opportunities

Postby Lawrence » May 18th, '07, 12:55

i've seen a few posts recently asking for a magician to do this or that.
perhaps we could have a section where people could advertise job opportunities or make requests for magicians?

we could of course extend it to general opportunities, like getting on TV or something. to let the rest of us know when the next "britains got talent" (or whatever) is coming around.

I think this is an excellent idea and not just for tv shows but for regular gigs too. I have on several occasions been asked about performing for a kids party or for an event I couldn't do and rather than turning them down flat it could be put on here.

The only trouble I see with this is that as TM is generally an open forum and attracts magicians of all ages and abilities, there may be the temptation for some of our younger members or less >ahem< professional members emailing or telephoning clients to apply for work and then either letting them down, or not being up to scratch, or perhaps offering to work at an event for £50 or something ridiculous...I hope you see what I mean.

It would be a good idea if perhaps it was placed in the restricted areas? But then how would prospective clients place their ad? Hmmm. Perhaps not so good an idea after all???

I'd just hate the idea of a corporate client advertising on TM, booking someone who isn't actually a working pro, and them turning up with a svengali deck and self-tying shoelaces. Not that there's anything wrong with a svengali deck or self-tying ahoelaces, but you see what I mean. I hope?

Lord, this hole is getting bigger & bigger.

Thanks for that Paul, I guess one way to deal with those concerns is for the person advertising for a performer to agree to take the sole responsibility for checking that the person they hire can actually do the job. In any event, I'd see it as something which would need to be Moderated along the same lines as the Trading Section to avoid the inevitably silly and spam posts which might arrive. On that basis, if someone desperately needed a performer the same day and the Mods aren't on line then the opportunity just wouldn't get posted. Still considerable thought required methinks....

I agree with themagicwand and think that most of the people that book magicians for corporate work in particular, have their established routes for finding who is up to the job and then booking them accordingly. I don;t think that you would get any corporate bookers looking at TM.

As for weddings and the like, again, I think that people would simply rely on either the Yellow Pages or a google search for what is available in their area.

From the two or three posts that I've seen on TM that have been advertising for a 'late in the day' magician, they tend to have fallen well under the rate of pay that would seriously attract an established magician.
