The Effect
An egg is placed inside a bag which has a see through front, and vanishes! Just as suddenly, the egg reappears again inside the bag! The performer removes the egg from the bag and places it into his pocket, but again the egg jumps inside the bag!

Review

Being a student and follower of the Tarbell course, I am inclined to seek out those good old fashioned magic effects from yesteryear out of curiosity and because they are tried and tested.
I had never bothered with an egg bag before, but having read about them many years ago, and being a fan of the great Tommy Cooper, I thought for the meagre price World Magic Shop were selling them for it would be worth having one as it looked like fun to play around with, would be good for kids shows and could be fitted into my cabaret routine as a comedy effect.
The bag itself is of a good quality and comes with instructions for two simple routines. It really does look like a good quality professional prop for just a small price.

It comes with a sheet of instructions containing two simple routines which are great fun and the bag itself is very easy to use and can be turned inside out and openly displayed before an egg visually appears inside.

What can I say? It's well made and does the job it supposed to and costs next to nothing. If you want to invest in an egg bag this is a good buy and you'll spend a good time in front of the mirror watching the egg appear and disappear with a "pleased-with-yourself" look on your face!

I've been looking for just the right egg bag for my kids shows.

I bought this one, thought it had a nice visual twist on the traditional opaque bag effect, but also found it limited in some other ways that I can't mention without tipping the method.

It won't be a problem for everyone, but I want to use the egg bag as an introduction to a couple of egg-based routines, and find that this one doesn't give me the flexibility that I want.

I also bought a Malini-style egg bag, but found it too fiddly. I don't want to have to hunt for the gimmick, and I want to use a larger egg than the Malini bag will support. I also want to be sloppy as hell with the handling and still feel safe. The Ultimate bag allows this but I'm still looking for perfection...

The search continues.

Tarbell volume 2 explains how to make your own one. Whether this is any use to you for what you want, I don't know but you could certanly make a larger one with the instructions.

The egg bag is a lovely routine for any magician to add to his or her routine. It's simple enough yet can be very visual.

Perspnally, I prefer the Mardo egg bag but at that price you can't go wrong.

It looks a lot more expensive than it is. I was expecting something cheap and cheerful to play around with but it's a quality looking prop. Good fun. I may use it in my adult cabaret act as a comedy style piece.

You always think that it's only kids that will be impressed by things like this and sponge balls but that's not the case. It's quite suprising really what adults take to.

I did egg bag as part of my Magic Circle entrance. I used the egg bag from Ron Bauer and Exacto egg. Both are beautifully crafted from the right material (Marlo egg bag) and work very well. The routine was a quick version of the Ken Brooke routine.

The egg bag is great as it works for all ages and is ideal in a family audience.

It certainly is. Although it's something that children undoubtably enjoy, and is very visual, it's also a prop that could be adapted to an adult routine.
Not only that, it's fun to play around with too!

I've never really found a commercial egg bag that I like, although I got a nice wooden egg with one that I use with an egg bag I got my mum to make me about 10 years ago (my first one was a bright blue PVC egg bag, with a weightless hollow plastic egg, you can imagine how much 'fun' it was to get this to work well!)

If I remember correctly, Geoffrey Durham does a very nice egg bag routine, I'm sure I've seen him doing it live, and he does it on The Best of Magic for adults if anyone still has that 'taped' off the telly.

Having never seen it being performed for children, I hadn't really thought of it as a children's effect - it's interesting to hear that other people find it hard to imagine it the other way round!

The Ken Brooke routine was indeed designed for adults, using 2 spectators with the performer.

It can be used just as well with children or one adult and one child. This can be great fun when the child finds the egg but the adult can't.

I would really recommend looking out this routine.

Thanks, that sounds like an entertaining routine.

The Egg Bag routine in Tarbell 1 uses two child assitants and can be adapted to suit whichever style of bag you have. The routines that came with this one could be expanded and played around with.

There's a Greater Magic Teach In DVD on the Egg Bag.

Some of it is deadly dull, but well worth checking out for the routines by Tom Mullica and Billy McComb.

Come to think of it, I bought the Himber Rings DVD and the Billy McComb routine shone out on that one too.

I think I might be a fan!

Billy McComb is one of the greats. I will have to look out for that DVD, is it available in the UK?

I don't think MW covers the egg bag, but it's certainly in the first two volumes of Tarbell. On looking the design to make one is in volume 2, the first one has egg magic, but the bag is in the second one.

I bought it from Hank Lee as part of a mammoth order some time ago, but you can get it on these shores too. Click here.

The DVD is a compilation of egg bag rotines from a number of Greater Magic releases though. Unless you want to see a number of different egg bag routines, it might be worthwhile just getting the Billy McComb release.
