Left hand cards?

Postby LeftEye » Dec 17th, '07, 16:01

Is there such a thing as left handed cards? As in the index of the card is in the opposite corner? I'm right handed but handle cards in my left (don't know why :?)

I'm a leftie. I've not looked for left-handed cards, but the only thing that it seems to seriously impact is fanning. I had to learn that when I'm pushing off cards from hand to hand, the index is at the end closest to me.

Yea you're looking at the index upside down. Sometime I get the Ace and 4 mixed up. I don't use fans too much but when I do I look down and it seems depressing with no colours :(

Useful if you want to show the spectators a "blank deck". I havn't done that before though, but if you get away with it could be pretty cool.

I'm sure I recall seeing decks with the indices in all four corners - have a word with young, good looking Clive at www.cards4magic.co.uk.

Bridge cards tend to have indexes on both corners, I think.

I looked for left handed cards when I was starting. The only ones I came across were more for manipulation, and not of the same quality as uspcc stuff. To be honest though, I've never experienced any problems apart from the odd bit of confusion with reading 'left' as 'right' in magic books- the only other thing is that I've got to be a bit careful when spreading cards from hand to hand to make sure the indices show at the bottom, but generally it's ok.

Bridge cards, like waddingtons No.1 have index markings on all four corners.

I bought some bicycle bridge cards about a year ago and was just having a look at them but they don't have 4 indexes. But it's fine really I never use bridge cards anyway.

I remember the good old days of using Waddingtons though :D

left hand cards

Postby alfredo » Dec 29th, '07, 15:45

I am just starting out in card conjuring and have started reading card college. I am very left handed. Can I achieve all of the sleights left handed or do I need to change over? This would cause me great difficulty. Advise would be appreciated

You can still do everything that a right handed person can do, except letting the spectator peek at the index of a card to select it, which can still be done with a bit of changing. Some very good controls and forces can be done with that.

Or if you spread through the cards the indexes are facing the wrong way, and your fans won't show the index either. And when you're reading through books, incuding the Card College books, everytime the books says right it will be your left, and everytime the books says left it will be your right. It gets natural after awhile, now when I'm reading I just automatically read right as left and left as right. Confusing really.

I'm also a leftie and it does get confusing when following instructions from books. But it does get easier and you will get somewhat used to it after a while. Even now, after years of learning from books, I still get myself in a right kerfuffle from time to time. And also be aware that some tricks are made for right-handers. For example, the gimmick you get with The Hidden (Andy Nyman) is made for a right-hander so if you're a leftie you're going to have to make up your own gimmick - fortunately, this is a matter of a few seconds work. Just something to be aware of, even if they are few and far between.

What an interesting problem!
I'd probably go the all-4-corners route. I very much doubt there's cards specifically switched for lefties.

I found some on a left handed site here:

I dunno if the USPCC do any..?
