EXTREME BURN - Richard Sanders

Postby dat8962 » Feb 28th, '08, 16:22

The Effect

The blurb from the box.

From the creator of Interlace, Fiber Optics, Super Cuts and more, comes a bill change that is so visually incredible you'll think you're watching a Hollywood special effect!

Count out five bills, one at a time. Show then the front and backs and lay them flat on your hand. With no folding, no cover, no nothing...The bills visibly change!

That's it. You are now holding five completely different bills. They are real bills.

If Harry Potter could do a bill change, this is what it wold look like!

Cost

Around £15 to £20 when it gets to the shops. Sanders sold out at Blackpool although it's rumoured that he only had 100 copies.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

About a 1.5 as the gimmick does most of the work.

Review

This was one of the star products at Blackpool and there is no denying that the change looked super cool.

The DVD is reasonably well produced and comes with the necessary gimmick which I think will surprise a lot of peope when they open it up.

The effect is a remake of the Pat Page Easy Money routine, a version of which is sold by JB magic for around a fiver with printed instructions. Sanders has added a small inexpensive metal gimmick and video recorded the making of the paper gimmick, the fitting of the metal gimmick and a variety of different ways of changing the bills.

To be honest, an experience magician should be able to work out his own handling from the printed instructions and it doesn't take that much imagination to make your own paper gimmick from the template that is included in the printed JB version. Therefore, the difference in price is for the metal gimmick which makes the change appear more visual.

Overall

It's unfortunate in some ways that the secret of the metal gimmick and how it works will probably not stay secret for long thanks to Youtube etc.

My own view is that if you haven't got a bill change already and want one, then this will be a good purchsse. If you already have then like me, I think that you're going to be a little disapointed when you realise how similar Extreme Burn is to what you probably already have.

I'd therefore rate this at 8 from 10

Nearly. Sanders was demoing the routine using paper cuttings from magazines and turning them into ten pound notes.

The only thing is that the notes that you change from need to be the same size as the notes that you change to. This will mean that you can't change from £10 to £20's etc.

Thanks,

I don't have a bill switch effect in my routine and was wondering if this is suitable for close up?

Ive watched the demo, and it does look good!

Whilst this is a multiple bill switch, a well executed single bill switch using a TT gets just as good a reaction in my opinion.

I wondered if it could be performed after a tt switch? ie is one of the bills ungimmicked and would it matter if it is creased?

This couldn't be perfomred after a TT switch as you need four notes and a certain thing to make up the gimmick for EB. You then have three or four ungimmicked notes.

What you could do is to perform EB turning paper cuttings into real notes, take one of the ungimmicked notes and then do a TT switch into a larger bill or a foreign currency, or even back to a paper cutting.

Sorry old man, don't know if I made myself clear...

My idea was that after the tt switch with one bill you pull the other 3 bills out of your wallet and transform the 4 bills, just to prove what a darn clever chap you are. Is that more mud like in it's clarity?

You see often after I change say £10 into £20 people say can you make £100, I'd then say no but I can make it into £80, pull out the other 3 bills and display them. "There £80, what I cheated?" So I change them into euros. The only other problem is I'm generally too skint to carry £80 with me!

I see  that's certainly possible!

A saw Michael Vincent lecture some time ago and he did a very smooth double bill switch (using a TT) changing a £5 to a £10 and then the £10 to a £20 before changing the £20 back to the original £5. It was one of the sweetest bill changes that I've seen.

Also, have you seen Dynaswitch? World Magic Shop sell it for around £7 and it's also a very sweet bill change without the need for a TT. I often carry it around in my wallet and change a plain piece of paper into a £20 note.

If you use repositional spray when making it up you can detatch the note from the gimmick and spend it, although this takes some misdirection and practice to do covertly.

I am very pleased with this.

I have seen various paper to money effects but this is very good, the switch is very visual.

Richard teaches loads of ways to do it so you should be able to find one or two you like.

You can make the change both ways very quickly without even looking at the notes before you change them which adds to the casual handling.

I am now using this effect so it must be good!

You can hand out most of the notes or papers.

My presentation changes the paper to notes then back again before they even have time to really ask. I present it along the lines of an illusion that is really just 4 bits of magic paper.

I only just got this at Blackpool and I have only used it out once which speaks for how easy and good this is, the reactions were very good.

Examination of props used to bug me a lot, I have found that when performing for friends they want to look & touch, when I am working people are generally more respectfull so its not an issue.

Set up takes about half an hour the first time, to make a spare takes about 10 minutes at most when you know what your doing.

This is also an instant reset if you change the notes back which is another plus.

I only really played with this properly from Monday in that bar at the southern meet for the first time but I'm really impressed with it.

The gimmick took me about 30 mins to make the first time but then I realised I'd used clippings for the gimmick that were maybe a little too thick. Might be something to watch for those who buy this and have their first go. the second time around it took about 15 minutes.

It does look visually stunning, it packs small ( I keep it in my wallet now) and I've used a few times now to pay for things and people have just been blown away with it.

It's a quick (very quick) visual trick that grabs attention and I love that you can show it both sides. it's also easy to do and the teaching and material is far more extensive than you could possibly need

Well done Mr Sanders
