Duplicity by John Bannon REVIEW

Postby Vipen » Aug 22nd, '08, 22:22

The Effect copied from the ad:
A red-backed Ace from one packet changes places with a blue-backed Ace in another packet.

The selected Aces appear face-up in each respective packet. Then their backs prove to be different. As a final climax, all of the other cards are shown to be blank!

Everything is examinable. Perfect for mentalists, table-hoppers, and card magic enthusiasts!

Step-by-step DVD instructions and a photo-illustrated e-book illuminate the workings of Duplicity. All necessary cards, specially printed by the U.S. Playing Card Co. are supplied.

Review
If you know Twisted Sister by John Bannon you know what a great packet routine it is. The multiple climaxes is what I love most about the effect. That and the simplicity. Duplicity is just like Twisted Sister but everything is examinable at the end. No switches. Basically there are no moves. Some word play is used but done very well. It is very easy to learn and perform. Some practice will be needed with your patter to perform it smoothly. It is a good price for something you can actually use. I really like Twisted Sister, and never had a problem with the fact that it is not totally examinable. In that respect I can't say I had a real need for the cards to end examinable. But I like the fact that they are in Duplicity. If you already have Twisted Sister, then you can determine if the examinability is something you want or not. I think I will use them both still.

Overall Highly Recommended 9/10

I have read that this is not worth buying due to the editing on the video not showing the whole routine and a question is missed out that would give the game away?

If that is true its a lot of money for what it is!!!

I see I was right!

Its a lot of money for what it is!!!!

Before anyone says anything about paying for the routine, if you can't figure it out what the various lines would be be ok buy it.

To be honest with you, I feel the official video was edited to stop you from working out how it's done. I like the effect though, nonetheless

I like the idea, I'm not sure how strong it is though.

I may give it a try.

The only problem is I haven't bought it!!!

Personally I like this...the fact it is clean is very welcome for me and the presentation is well thought out and road tested. The wording is very well considered and some of the best scripting for this kind of "methodology" I have heard.

It isn't totally without "moves" although there is an option for it to be. The one "move" (namely a well know c**** by Mr. E) gives you a major visual effects in the trick... it's well worth doing in my opinion and the scripting covers it so well, again, the best I have heard while doing this "move". I do this one move as an effect pretty much in and of itself and it has garnered some of the most genuinely amazed responses I have ever had!

The effect is very weird looking despite being very simple in terms of it's skill level for us. The magic takes place in the spectators hands and you are totally guiltless at the end, the spectator can try and "get their head 'round it" to their hearts content. To me , that's a real winner, no matter how simple in the working.
The real skill will be in the scripting and the selling of it. Get it right and you will get reactions like the womans in the video. Editing or not you can see they put in her quite unprompted response at the end...sweeeet.

I say that if you like this you should buy it, the scripting, DVD coaching and subtle handlings alone are worth the price let alone the method or any cards.

If we can hit that bullseye then the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate!

The fact that they didn't show the whole routine in the demo I don't think should be a negative thing. It's just a demo. A lot of tricks have demos that don't even show any part of the trick - which always annoys me.
If you can see through how the whole thing is done then you might feel it is not worth it. Which is the same for any trick. Learning the scripting and methodology correctly has its value. There is a difference between knowing how a trick is done, and knowing how to perform it accurately. However, like I said, I haven't traded in my Twisted Sister for it yet. The examinability factor isn't as important of a thing for me, but it is nice being totally 'guiltless' as Tom said. The price isn't much different from Twisted Sister which has special cards. But Duplicity has the blank cards, and DVD instruction, and ebook. It is undoubtedly a good routine.

Well said, it is a matter of choice.

The value is in the idea and the guidance not in the knowledge of the workings...the quality of the results is up to the performer!

I know this is an old thread, but I recently got this effect and have to say, I like it a lot.

I must admit, I have never performed Twisted Sisters, so I can't compare the too, but this effect, although the methodology may seem apparent to seasoned magicians, absolutley stuns lay people.

It involved an EC which is something I tend to use way too much, so therefore I can do pretty well but the effect can be performed without this but does lose a small touch of convincability. The reactions I have received from performing this imply that the spectator has entered the Twilight Zone as it seems, to the layperson, totally inexplicable.
