I guess it all depends how you look at it and how you interpret their intentions and performances (which were obviously honourable, and I suppose they did play it with the right tone); some of the things were quite bad (notice the way everyone seemed to turn those baskets around as they handed them to the next person  )?

As Seige said though, we as magicians are quite critical, and we're not their target audience - non-magis would have just seen it as a bit of light entertainment and I guess from their pov some of the stuff would have been quite strong.

Sometimes it'd be nice to see these things through non-magi eyes.

And you can...

Just try watching these things with a load of non-magicians present and listen to their reactions. You will learn a heck of a lot about performance styles and 'what floats boats'. What WE as magicians see is not always what the discerning public see.

For instance, watching the 'Virgin gets pregnant' skit, I was looking for method, etc. Wheras, my family were wondering "so, was she pregnant, or was she not pregnant".

It is the QUESTIONS raised by the audience which dictate whether the effect is strong, in my opinion. And the show caused a lot of debate in our household mainly due to the strength of the effects, and their seemingly impossible nature.

So much so, I was actually carried along this wave and felt like a magic virgin again, a wonderous feeling.

A lot of people I know though are quite sceptical from the start - they prefer Derren Brown type stuff. Still, sounds like people enjoyed it, and that's what matters.

This is off-topic, but what does the VDB stand for?

It is a cunning device my lord, more cunning than a fox who has just been made professor of cunning at Oxford University.

Actulayy, it's pretty boring as it's just my surname Van Den Bergh (VDB) but there we go, saves ink!

Think the non-magicians that I've spoken to who saw it had too great an expectation - probably coloured by Harrey Potter, Spiderman and many of the other SFX rich productions.

I was neither bored nor excited, just there! I am always pleased when magic hits the box so overall it was a win no matter what I reckon.

personally i dont like the style, i find them irritating and quite cringy to watch. But on the other hand i have had so many of my friends and family come up to me and tell me how amazing it was. They are still talking about water into wine trick. Thats the point of the show.

I think if i could think back to when i didnt know anything about magic, then i would have been astounded......the guys would still irritate me but i would be hooked by the magic. I think thats the problem when youre a magician, if youre slightly put off by the style of a performer before they even do a trick. Then in your mind, you forget its a not a performance for magicians. you know how most of the tricks are done, you can probably do most of them yourself, and you have to sit and watch someone who you dont particularly like run through a whole routine while entertaining your close family and friends.

They dont know whats going to happen, theyre watching for whats going to happen, whereas we are watching and looking for the things that are making the trick happen.

I think its sad the amount of posts on here criticising magicians(mainly tv magicians) like derren brown, criss angel david blaine etc... when to the vast majority of the public, these people are the very people who are keeping magic alive. Fair enough they may not be to everyones style but it doesnt mean theyre bad magicians or fakes. Maybe we did see a glimpse of a double card, spot a top palm or we know hes using an ID(which is highly likely if we know how its done) but if the audience truly believe it, just for those few moments, then theyre the greatest magicians in the world.

And judging by the amount of fans, and ratings these guys bring in, they are definetly good magicians.

what was the original questionagain? sorry for ranting on, was in my head. 8)
cheers

Someone should tell Barry & Stuart, apparently C4 aren't too hot on letting artists know when shows are repeated.
