Expanded non-magic area?

Postby MagicBell » Aug 23rd, '08, 22:21

Hopefully im allowed to make these suggestions now.

I thought perhaps The Dove's Head was not enough to handle all the non-magic threads and perhaps another area could be created for something in particular.

If you look in there now, there's a couple of threads floating around about books/reading. We mention books that we are reading but i imagine for many, those books could hold a lot of discussion value. However, if we start discussing a number of those books, we would flood the forum.
So perhaps a 'Film, TV & Books' section? Or maybe then, that would take ALL the topics from the Dove's Head.

I dunno, its just a suggestion to see if anyone else has any ideas or if its worth it. I find people's opinions and views on this forum more interest than most other forums ive posted on, so i thought perhaps there could be more to discuss with these members.

It's also no secret that I have an interest in psychology. Perhaps then, with this suggestion, I could find somewhere to blab on with other members about certain books and materials, as a dedicated section for that alone would be a bit too much.

Just a suggestion. Likelihood is its been suggested and dumped before, but i thought i'd add my 2 pence. Is it worth asking other members if they agree??

while you make some valid points i think your hitting a fatal flaw that this site is a forum for magic. it shouldn't contain talks on things outside of magic/mentalism because that's what people come to this forum for. naturally there are people who make friends with others online and on this forum and they might like to chat about other subjects but that's the point of the doves head in the first place.
anyway just like you that's just my opinion and i hold no actual ill feelings towards the idea i just think its a bit unnecessary

The Dove's Head was created in response to requests for a non-magic area so members could generally chew the fat but not clog up the magic areas and threads. In that respect it seems to have worked quite well.

Basic problem with another area is that we only recently competed some serious pruning of surplus and unused areas, again in response to suggestions, so adding another one might reverse that process a little. As always, nothing here on TM is cast in stone (apart from some of the TM policies!) and we always take note of ideas even if it's some time before they bear fruit.

My point was that we could discuss many non-magic topics with the same group of people we have grown used to 'talking' with. As opposed to having to join other forums to discuss these things with tons of other people. As I said, I like the personalities I have found on here, whereas with many other forums the trends are otherwise, so I thought it might be nice.

I understand your point too. This is first and foremost a magic forum and nothing should take away from that. We have a space for non-magic related topics and there's no real necessity to overdo it and take away from the main magic core of what TM was made for.

On the other hand, you mentioned unused areas, and with the wide range of content that could go in to such a topic, as well as the accessibility of such content to the majority of users, I don't imagine it would have any problems with under usage.

Anyway, it was just a thought. I'm here for the magic so I'm still happy.

Thanks for listening. 8)

I don't see the need for an expanded off-topic section. We already have the Doves Head for off-topic talk, which isn't exactly over-crowded (I've seen message boards with busier off-topic forums). So really, it's a case of not broken so pointless fixing it

Some of us take chats, magic and not so, away from the forum anyway. Using Paltalk. If you get friendly with someone, why not. But I don't think its fair to clog up someone else's forum with irrelevance !!
