The Effect
A card is selected, signed and cut into the pack. A borrowed quarter is then wrapped in a piece of tissue paper, placed on the deck and touched with a lit match. The paper ignites in a dramatic flash and the borrowed quarter visibly burns straight down into the pack! When the smoke clears, the quarter is found resting at the bottom of the freshly burned hole, which runs through the top half of the deck. When the spectator lifts away this destroyed upper half and turns over the card directly beneath the quarter, it's his signed card!

Nice trick with nice effect but... if you get it from the same supplier than myself be warned it states "Now with NEW REALISTIC-LOOKING BURN PATTERN IN THE CARDS!" this is just basically an odd cut to the cards and not realistic looking at all. It also states "The deck may be closely examined. This reputation-making routine is virtually self-working and resets in seconds. Comes complete with illustrated instructions and a very special deck of Bicycle playing cards." The deck can only be examined after the trick and not before and the illustrated instructions consist of one picture which does not really help much. I would not call it self working but it is not overly hard. I added some burn marks to the cards with a lighter to make it look a little better.

4/10. I think I will use this trick a few times but I do not think it will end up being something I use often or a main feature of any of my routines

I hate to disagree with you there but I've had this routine for quite awhile now and if swapped in at the end of a routine I tend to find this is a killer routine.
Some of the best reactions I've had from an audience have been with this effect. I must agree that the holes aren't the most realistic but not once has anyone ever questioned them.
I must admit when I first practiced this trick I wasn't totally convinced but audience reaction has certainly changed my mind on this.

I've read things before about the quality of these cards. Is it a real issue?

Why would you want to have it examined before? This should not be a factor. Do you start all your card tricks by handing out the deck to check that it's real? You see what I mean?

Personally I dont think it is an issue as I've not had any spectator question it at all. They buy it hook, line and sinker. I usually do a few card tricks, go to a rope or other effects not using cards and then bring out "in a flash".

I appreciate your comments. The above is only my view and I have not performed this trick on real people yet so my views might change.

As for having the spectators examin the cards before the trick, a lot of the tricks I like to do involve the spectators to shuffle the cards or have involvement in the trick, I was making this point mainly for people who have not seen or done this trick, trying to give as much information as possible. I guess the trick did not grab me as much as some I have got. Personal preference I guess.

Personally it sounds like the kind of effect that I would do as a closer - so hand the cards out, have them shuffled, do some magic (AC routine for example) then get out some coins or sponges before bringing back the 'same' deck for In a Flash. A simple deck switch while getting out the sponges would do the trick .

It's a great closer Kati and it just kicks when performed well.

What makes this effect in my opinion is that each time that you use the cards the scorch marks increase which adds nicely to the overall effect as this is one effect where worn cards seem to work better (in that they sell the effect more).

I've found that lay people just love this one

As for 4/10? I say pah.

Actually I am glad you rate it so low. This has proved a killer effect for me, and I end my close up set with it, so the fewer people doing it the better as far as I am concerned. 4/10? I say 1 out of 10.. It's rubbish.

I know this is an old thread but i came across it while nosing around. This is one of the best tricks i own i dont understand how you give it a 4/10 i would say 10/10. Ive been asked for my business cards on this trick alone this absolutly frys people and it is my closer too.

I use this all the time and i agree with Lindz

With being a great fan of Jay Sankey I love this trick.
I use it to end my close up routine and it works a treat.
I often do a few card tricks then put the deck away do a few other tricks then bring out the in a flash deck.
This way the specs don't think anything of it and never ask to see the deck before I do the trick.
Great trick recommend to anyone.

My review gave it a 10/10, other than a TT this is the only "gimmicked" effect in regular use all these years on!!

But how many active threads on this do we need?
