The Hooey Stick

The Effect.
The Hooey stick consists of a stick of dowel with notches cut out of it. At the end is loosely nailed a wooden propeller. You take a second smaller piece of dowel and rub it along the notches, and the propeller will start to turn really fast. You ask an audience member to shout “Hooey” and at exactly that point the propeller will change direction. This can be repeated as many times as necessary.

The Hooey stick can be handed out, and it is unlikely that anyone will be able to make the propeller spin let alone be able to make it change direction.

1=Very Easy, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
Once you know the secret – it can be done every time very easily.

Ok, so this isn’t going to be every ones cup of tea, and arguably it might be considered more a puzzle than a magic trick. In my opinion though this can be sold to the public as a telekinetic mind control experiment and has always gone down very well for me. I really do like this one. If you like PK effects – then this makes a novel change. (btw – there are no magnets used in this).

I have mentioned it before in this forum, but never knew what it was called. Well know I now and I really think it is good enough to share.

The move to make it change direction is extremely subtle and I have shown this to people time and time again – almost in slow motion and still they can’t repeat what I am doing. They end up having to believe that shouting “Hooey” is what makes it change. There Just isn’t any other explanation!

Sadly I haven’t yet found a UK place to buy this, although I did find instructions on how to make it – which I could post in the MO area if need be.

Maybe if it is popular enough Laurence would consider importing for sale at emagictrics (or even better - we could make them ourselves. As far as I am aware there is no copyright on this) (ok, now I am getting carried away)

Bottom Line.
It’s nice to own a magic trick that has been around since at least the 1700’s (So I am led to believe).

Personally I really like this a lot, it’s really nicely made – no plastic. (not that plastic is always evil) and is a little bit different from the standard cards and coin magic.

You know what Simon, I love your reviews! Everyone foams at the mouth about version 16.7 of some tired, over-hyped and over-expensive whatever... is it endorsed by Kenton Kipper and what-not...

...and then I find a lovely, unassuming and concise little review by you of something called... The Hooey Stick. It's a piece of wood with a propeller nailed in the end and it only costs 3 quid - how can you lose.
