books you need to own

all the fulves self working books.

the Mark wilson course, naturally

Tarbell. all 8 volumes, and far from expensive as mentioned above.
for around 100 pounds you get everything you will ever need to know about magic.

13 steps

Annemans practical mental magic

Rice silk magic. 4 volumes of good solid magic. and not just for silks.
Principles within these books, can be applied to just about anything .

Royal Road to card magic

scarne on cards

Paul Clives card tricks without skill. An often overlooked book, wihich contains some of card magics best known effects.

Jarrett, magic and stagecraft technical.( Guy Jarrett, Jim Steinmyer)
The book on stage Ilusions.
this gives you teh insight into what makes a good illusion, written by one of magics most oppinionated of characters Guy Jarrett. If you think Craig Browning, add me, and times it by 20, you get close. But it is a great book.

Steinmyers hiding the elephant.
steinmyers art and artifice
steinmyers.. heck, just anything that Jim Writes is going to be the best thing you will ever read.

History wise Milbourne christophers books are a must.

more to follow..

I've managed to get away without either of these. What are we missing that's so important?

well, both these books rank alongside royal road in many resepcts, because they contain countless routines supplied by the big names in card magic from teh first half of the 1900s.
Scarnes contributors being mostly from the usa, and Clives, being from europe and the united kingdom.
The last effect in the scarne book, is his thoughts on out of this world, and was published at around the same time as Paul Curries.
Indeed, this is a perfect example of two minds thinking allike.
another thing in both these books favour is, unlike royal road, most of the effects do not relly on moves. thats not to say that they are all self working, far from it.

I really think that these books have been overlooked by too many. The Clive book in particular, which contains a very good history of the brainwave/ID as part of it's gaffed deck section. This being something that Royal Road does not contain.Another thing in it's favour.

My first magic book was The Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay. It's still one of my favorites, though the Mark Wlson book probably would have been better for me when I was younger.

Has anyone mentioned Eugene Burger's Mastering the Art Of Magic? This is a superb book and a great next step for anyone to move to from Royal road etc and wondering where to go next. It offers advice on performance as well as effects.
If this hasn't been reviewed before I'll put one up at some point.
