David Copperfield in Australia

David Copperfield in AUS this month, he was in Adelaide last week for 2 shows around 4,000 people per show, tickets ranged from AU$150 - AU$350.

The duration of the show was a little disappointing, 75 minutes. I am not sure what the "norm" is but it felt a little under done. The performance part of the show however was great, mixing some things I had seen him do before on TV (tissue to flame to rose & transporting a duck into a bucket held by a spec etc) with some things I hadn't seen before... a number of things with a mentalism twist.

Interesting how a commercially available effect can be all the more impressive when handled by someone who really knows presentation.

Another observation, I enjoyed the way he performed a number of effects in a way that one could try and "guess" at the method, only to repeat the effect in a slightly different way that made your "guess" totally wrong. You could see specs "thinking that had it sorted" only to be left doubly dumbfounded a minute later.

The highlight of the show being telling the story of his grand father's dislike for show business and how his grand father only ever owned 2 cars, both Lincolns, he retained the number plates of the 2 cars, of course...

so, rubber Frisbees are thrown into the crowd where around a dozen people are seemingly randomly selected. 3 are asked to provide 2 random numbers plus a personal piece of info about themselves while the others serve as witnesses.

A clear acrylic box that has obviously been suspended above the stage since before the show began is lowered in full view, a padlocked steel box
is removed and after being unlocked, this all being done either by witnesses or under their close scrutiny, the contents are handed to other witnesses.

Of course, DC has accurately predicted the random numbers AND the personal information, plus... you may have predicted this yourself, the random numbers match the numbers on the car's plates which were also in the locked box.

After doing the Derryn Brown style revelation, he returns to vintage Copperfield making the actual Lincoln appear in the air above the stage. Using a ladder, climbing into the car Copperfield starts the car, turns the wheel etc to show it's "real"...

The show was full of humor and polite innuendo, I was thoroughly entertained, my kids (10 and 13) thought it was fantastic!

DC performed on Wednesday and Thursday nights, then on Friday evening he booked an entire cinema for a private screening of a "Horror" movie called "Drag me to Hell". It was reported there were only 2 people in the cinema for the movie, DC and a pretty lady friend.

I really enjoyed the show.
