iDeck By Noel Qualter £39.99 Alakazam

"Noel's ideck is clever, funny, magical and novel. I want one!" - David Williamson

Alakazam Magic presents Noel Qualter’s iDeck!

From the slightly weird, yet very creative mind of Noel Qualter comes a commercial effect that is off-beat, quirky, funny, entertaining and above all very magical!

Effect

You joke about buying an early iPod prototype that just arrived this morning. With tongue firmly in cheek, you introduce a card box that resembles an iPod and call it your "iDeck”

You show every card inside has the name of a famous song from the last 50 years of music and ask the spectator to select one and return it to the box. The magician then brings out a set of headphones and attaches them to the box in a humorous and amazing way.

The spectator names his song and it plays from the headphones and the crowd go wild.

Easy to do
Instant reset
Maybe repeated with a different outcome
Customise you system depending on the age or musical taste of your audience (over 25 popular titles to choose from)
Custom made gimmicks

Each iDeck package comes complete with instructional DVD, Custom headphones, beautiful song cards (plastic coated to last a lifetime), Custom deluxe iDeck gimmick, Blank iDeck card box, N42 Extreme power neo magnet, iDeck sticker.
You DO NOT need to buy or own anything extra - the iDeck effect comes complete with EVERYTHING that you need to perform the effect. No additional props or devices are required!

No expense has been spared bringing you this fantastic effect! The props are of the highest quality and the effect has been in development for well over 18 months.

"Noel's ideck has instant appeal. It combines magic and popular culture which is something very rare!"-Jon Allen
"That is ******* awesome!" - Jeff McBride

"That is incredible....best trick I have see this year.... and quite a bit of last year" - John Archer

"Just what I would expect from Noel Qualter - funny, clever and super cool" - Aaron Fisher

Well what can I say...got this at 9am today, and opened the packet up to find a little gem of an effect! Thought about getting this some months back as a bit of fun to add into my new set...and its going straight in...

You get a very thorough dvd (as usual from alakazam) and Noel and Peter take you step by step throught the process of setting up your i-deck. Its a shame that the workings cant be told openly cos they are ace.

Basically youve got an ipod (its a box) and some headphones and a bunch of song cards (similar to card stock from directors cut).

The spec picks a song card and the speakers play it.. its fab...and anyone who buys it will smile with joy. You may not use it or have it fit your style but its worth having just for something super fun to play with.

Ive tried it in the office today, and the receptionist was blown away and then laughed her *rse off...so I presume thats a good thing...

It took me about 20 mins to put it all together, including songs etc, handly my ipod was sat next to me to reference music at the time...but overall lovely little effect...I think its very innovative in using sound reveal rather than a visual.

Now go buy!

I was waiting for someone to review this :)

To me, it looks more like a fun novelty. However, it looks quite funny and surprising. Thanks for the review!

How many song cards do you get? Can you play any of them?

EDIT: S'ok, I just answered my own question. (32 and yes).

Just seen the review, thanks for taking the time to do it and I'm glad you like the effect. It was a huge amount of effort to put together iDeck but I'm certain it was all worth it. I've performed iDeck tonnes in the last few years and was nagged to release it by fellow pro's.

I am selling them with free special delivery postage and have them in stock - www.tricktrickboom.com

At last - you pay a substantial(-ish) amount of money for an effect...

It sits at the top of your post pile as you dread that moment where you open it, see the gimmick, and go "Noooo - that's awful" or realise the ad was economic with the truth and that there's one moment that everyone will see through in an instant...

You wonder how much you'll get for it "opened but unused"...

Not so with iDeck. It does everything you hoped it would. Easy to use but requires enough magicianship that you don't think "Yes but a 5-year old could probably do that".

I love it. Already some great and completely baffled reactions. "I want one! I want one!" say non-magicians. Very entertaining, easy to design your own patter and very *now*.

Well done all involved - a quality product that I really cannot fault.

I'm finding that the "magically attaching earphones" bit is distracting people a bit too much. They can easily guess how it's done and then they think they've worked the whole thing out, which takes away the impact when their chosen song starts to play. I've been getting stronger reactions by having the earphones in place from the beginning.

Just my take on things...

I was going to ask about this very subject but you've saved me the trouble. I do wonder why the magically attaching earphones was included as I don't feel it is necessary; like you said, I think it steals the thunder of the main effect and doesn't really add all that much. Perhaps others have been getting favourable responses with the earphone thing, but I think it's superfluous in the main.

Here's my take on the earphones thing:

Yes they can work out how the earphones click on and then maybe it does alert them to the fact that the box is not just a box in that respect.

BUT

I love: Getting them to select a card then put the cards back in. Then I press play on the box and say "We're not hearing anything - why would that be?". They then generally say "Er....'cause it's a cardboard box?". I reply with "No, because I've not put the headphones in" and then pull the phones from my pocket. It does go down really well and is another moment of humour after "I'm just going to give the cards an iPod shuffle". Even if they don't give me the cardbord box line and instead say "Because you've got no speakers?" - they still like it when you pull out the phones.

What I've started to do is then just press them on as if they just stick rather than using the more magic method on the vid as it unfortunately does draw attention to not everything being as it seems too early.

Conclusion: I would still miss the opportunity for bringing out the phones as part of the routine.

Still love this effect.

BUT fellow owners:

Do you sometimes find that the music doesn't play first time? It seems to be especially if I've not used it for an hour or so but can be messy if I don't realise pre-performance.

It could be a battery issue? Anyone else experienced this?

I find that it is difficult to use in a walk round situation.

Quite often I have being performing other effects and have 'activated' my Ideck. As it does sit in a precarious location.

(Mods please delete if this is to close to exposure)

Has any body else suffered this?

Impossible is nothing, if you only believe!

Yes! There should be an "off switch" really. Otherwise you get some unexpected "Billie Jean" now and then!
