I enjoyed Absolute Magic and Pure Effect. I'd like to have seen the general reaction before he became the star he did and everybody started wanting to be him.

I think some of the interesting points he has made are on his lecture for International Magic. Really deep stuff.

Yeah, I read that he was well known by magicians before he was famous... But I'm curious about how well he was known and how respected he was. If I'm 100% honest about the international lecture, I was a little dissapointed at his performance- but it was nice to see reminiscence; fortunatley though, it is a reasuring piece of knowledge that even the living legend was once human like the rest of us. I found that on that lecture, the second part where he discussed some principles (mostly outlined, if not all, in pure effect) he was much more at ease and comfortable with the audience- the atmosphere was better.

Another one I'd reccomend, perhaps over the lecture, is the devil's picturebook. It's got more meat to it and has little 'theory', it's just derren playing with some cards (or in respect 'some pasteboards') and it thoroughly enjoyable- as one review aobut it said: 'Thank God for video tape, or we may have missed what Derren got up to when he was 'just' a magician'. which sums it up perfectly.

Absolue magic is like the bible

In the name of the Dunninger, and of Canasta and of the holy Derren. Ber-glas.

Ok, I know I'm passionate about magic, but I really need to stop comparing it to religion.

Both DVDs are excellent. I'm fortunate to have sat down and sessioned(ish) with Derren and Hollingworth at the same table. Derren wasn't performing or doing anything special, just laughing at his now failing card skills, but had some insightful opinions.

I hate you. And to think that I was jealous of the people who got the books for 20 quid.

Love Sam. xD

SamGurney wrote:Better be selective. I think I'll have to report you if you sell the 13 steps! Btw, I would happily pay hundreds of quid for each page of absolute magic- it's like a bible, it's some morals and aspirations to live by for magicians. Sell pure effect if you must, I would rather sell my underwear than absolute magic, it's up there with psychological subtleties and the royal road.

Mate, I'm afraid you'd better get reporting cos my signed copy of 13 Steps is one of the 1st up against the wall when the revolution comes..!

surely is.

It's not in the best condition, but was signed by Corinda.

Just one of those things, mentalism isn't so much my style... I still use a few subtleties in what I do, but that's about it...
