This plot is good but it doesn't really do much to impress most people.

As for Card Magic being lame to laypeople. I find that false, sense guys like Juan Tamariz became "supposedly" hugely famous in Spain for his card magic. Then again it could be more due to his persona and the card magic was just a side effect.

They do get so enthusiastic! I was just noticing it the other day. Are they payed actors, or do they just manage to find the happiest people in the world?

Anyhow, I figure a skilled performer could make it exciting.
I can't manage to find a good video of a good ACAAN online to see audience reaction. Only that Marc Paul one. I would be interested to see how different audiences respond to one that is well done.

They always seem so happy don't they. I'd love to perform for audiences like that all the time!! :D

L and L audiences are not actors but they are wined and dined and told to hoot and holler. A magician made me laugh the other day when I saw him perform for a lukewarm audience of other magicians. He said, "Where is there an L and L audience when you need one?"

Sometimes you just have to buy L and L to watch the audiences- are they always the same or is it just the big black one who claps like a chicken?

They are a pretty annoying audience. You'd think that after a few recordings they'd get tired of seeing the same effects over and over again.

I know! The food/drink/pay must be pretty good to see someone say "here's something you might not have seen before" then go on to do his own variant on Collectors...

Regarding Matthew Johnson's ACAAN, I could be wrong but doesn't this require you to carry multiple decks...?! I'm sorry, but unless you are the showman of the year, ACAAN is not a closer... or an opener... frankly I wouldn't carry one gaffed/stacked/set up deck to perform it, never mind several...

I might be recording some mentalism with my mate who is into media and I was thinking of performing the berglas effect a few times, but I'm not so sure now. Any recomend anything to replace it?

Yeah, I can understand if somebody is a fan of magic. But after seeing the same effect only done with different lines and maybe a different twist. You'd think after awhile they'd get pretty bored of seeing that stuff.

I will admit that I DID kind of like Bill Malones effects, just not his jokes. After awhile, he get's annoying.

Vanishing Inc Magic have just released a nice version called CAANDY by Chris Mayhew. I purchased yesterday and had a look at the method, which I thought was very clever.

A card is "created" instead of chosen by inserting a "creator card" into the deck. The card either side will indicate the suit and the value, and the spectator can decide which is which. The spectator also choses a number from 1 to 50 (because 2 cards have been taken out). The card created is at the number chosen.

It looks good, theres a little bit of basic maths involved but it seems like a great method.

The download is only about £6 as well.

Hope that helps

I agree CAANDY looks like a must buy. I like Chris Mayhews idea with the creator card.

I am surprised no one so far has mention Barrie Richardson’s Card At Any Number. This can be done with a borrowed deck and no setup. I do actually use this allot. I think people shy away from it due to its high purchase price for just a manuscript, but I can assure you that it is worth every penny.

Matthew Garrett lecutred something nice as part of the ambitious card routine. A number between 1 and 20 is chosen, he cuts the cards exactly to that point first time, and the at the number chosen is their "ambitious card".

Its a nice touch, and something ive already used.

I'm usually the one that bangs the Barry Richardson impromptu version because I'm a big fan :-)

I recently picked up John Born's 'Meant to Be' book on ebay and it has a number of different methods and some interesting thoughts on creativity. His method is clever, but still not quite right for me. I'll stick with Mr R for now...

I only perform one ACAAN effect, and that's Steve Shufton and Ben Harris' CRACAAN which comes as a bonus with Crossroads. It's a beautiful work of art - performer doesn't touch the pack at all, spectator does all the counting, has a free choice of number, and there's no complicated mathematics at any point in the process. For anyone looking to get an ACAAN effect, this is the way to go.
