You could try shimming it with a pin instead of actually sticking a magnet in it...

For a thing im working on - person takes pencils out of box and places them on table. Spec thinks of one of the colour and that colour pencil rolls of the table. Theres more to it than that though, lol, its Aura based.

Hi Chris. I made a magnetic pencil years ago for the effect where a coin placed on the back of the hand changes when tapped. It wasnt a colouring pencil though but a normal writing pencil with a rubber. I popped the rubber out and cut a small disc off. Glued a magnet into the metal bit that holds the rubber, and glued the rubber disc back on :) . If you used normal pencils but ones that were different colours this may work. I got the magnet from a kids 'Magnetix' set which worked very well.

Ps. I used a disk of rubber because it had to be for the effect, this made the rubber look used. If you want the pencil to look new then cut the rubber in about half :)

Was just thinking there and my above suggestion might not be suitable for your effect as the magnet would be in one end rather than the middle. This could make the rolling difficult.
The cheap sets of coloured pencils from places like Poundland usually have one or two in which the lead hasnt been glued in correctly and can slide out, especially if it has been dropped on the floor. If you could find a magnet thin enough it could be put into the centre of the pencil and the lead replaced with a spot of glue (sanded at the top and sharpened at the writing end). If you cant get a magnet thin enough then using Flashs suggestion of some sort of pin or metal rod could be used instead. Though it may mean your 'source' would have to be closer :)

Is this what you're after, Chris?

I had a couple of suggestions for how to do this yourself, but they were educated guesses. I have just remembered seeing something that might be exactly what you need. I'll PM you.

Come to think of it I got some neos that are rods and about the same diameter as crayon lead...

    Yep here they are;

Cheap as chips and would be just fine for Mr Ferguson's idea...

it might be easier to do with crayons as you can reapply the paper covers after you tamper with them. just an idea but sounds like it would still work with your trick

Can you not use colouring pens instead?

buy unpainted pencils, split them, insert the magnet, glue, then paint them up to look right.

this is how the lead is put in, in the first place....

Remove eraser from end of pencil, cut it in half, glue small neo into the brass ferrule and then glue the half eraser back on again. Great for finding gaffed cards and other 'attractive' items from a selection of sealed envelopes.....

You can also get those pencils that have leads on bits of plastic throughot the pen / pencil. Once used you pop it out and push it into the rear end of the pencil which pushes another lead out the front.

They also do coloured pencils like this. It would be easy enough to push a few out and put a small neo somewhere in the middle.

I am intrigued. This sounds like a great idea for a gimmick. Very James Bond. What do you intend on doing with it and what else could we do with this?

Its going to be for part of an aura reading about colours...and the spectator doesnt mention "out loud" which colour they think their aura is, they just look at a stack of colouring pencils and the one they are thinking of rolls away from the stack towards them. 8)
