Card Toon and Card Toon 2 by Dan Harlan
Trick Type: Full Deck of Cards (including 3 jokers!)
Prices: Each £13.95 (April 2003)
Difficulty: 2/5
Examinable: Nope – apart from the 3 jokers!
Angles: Table
Reset: Less than a minute in private, but could equally be done ‘observed’ if you are clever enough - which I'm not!
Instructions: 5/5

Both are a similar effect although 2 has a revised alternative working to ring the changes. (Both can be viewed as video demos on http://www.penguinmagic.com )

Effect: Magician ribbon spreads a deck of cards face up to show full deck in suit and number order and asks for someone to name any card – a genuinely free choice! Magician removes selected card places it face up on table, introduces his ‘assistant’, a small stick figure magician drawn in marker pen on the back of the cards, and explains that the little man (called ‘Bob’ in the videos) will find the selected card in a very magical way. Bob is ‘shown’ the selected card and the Magician then starts to riffle the pack which animates the cartoon figure and Bob is seen to remove his top hat, reach inside, and eventually withdraw a marker pen version of the selected card. In Card Toon 2 he climbs inside a circus style canon, lights the fuse and is blasted out into a shower of cartoon cards but still gets the right one!

Review: Both are described as ‘charming’ effects and I agree 100%! There’s only one ‘move’ to make and it’s quite straightforward even for a fumble fingers like me – the effect when the chosen card is found at the end is quite staggering. Having only received these within the last 3 hours, I’ve shown it to just 2 people and they’re still gobsmacked. Just think how good it will be after I’ve practised! It’s the sort of routine where you can really go to town on the patter and presentation and let the mechanics almost look after themselves. Just one gripe, the blurb for Card Toon 2 says it’s printed on Bicycle stock but the version I received wasn’t. 1 and 2 are both on the same funny Belgian cards but are red backed and vaguely similar to Bikes. As it’s unlikely you’d ever want folks to assume it’s an ordinary deck – it’s covered in ‘marker pen’ drawings! – this is probably just a small whinge. The videos show the correct card stock so you can check them out beforehand.

Not really a ‘proper’ magical trick but, as the pack says, a charming routine which the kids will like and, for some strange reason, women seem to find ‘Bob’ quite fascinating. Size might not always matter but it’s obviously important!

8/10

Great review Paul.

I have just watched the video and I too like the effect. I suppose that on this occasion, it doesn't really matter that the deck is un-examinable, since it is plainly NOT a normal deck.

It is a shame they're not Bicycles though.

... Tony

Hi!

I've played with these 2 routines a bit more now and, to be fair, not being Bikes isn't much of a problem. The quality and feel are exactly the same so we're not talking shoddy cardboard. In the instructions to Card Toon 2 the makers actually tell the customer to throw away the box which the cards came in as it's not very good quality but the US Playing Card Co required them to use that box. There's also reference to checking a website for replacement boxes so I guess that some versions of 2 actually are on Bikes. Having said all that, those US videos use the Belgian cards so the mystery deepens!

The boxes themselves aren’t all that strong (or impressively designed/printed) so I’ll need some replacements, blank or decorated. It should be straightforward enough to do those on a computer and print off on nice shiny photo quality card – copyright permitting, of course! Another weirdo thing I noticed on the instructions (see, I do read them!) is that Card Toon is copyright 1996 whereas Card Toon 2 is copyright 1994 - two years earlier - which reminds me of the bit in Hitchhikers’ Guide to the galaxy where Zaphod Beeblebrox’s grandfather is called Zaphod Beeblebrox The Third due to an accident with a condom in a time machine!

Both are still very good routines for the comedy and 'gee, that's cute' factors.

I have to say that I looked at cardtoon last saturday and didn't notice that it wasn't on bicycle so maybe they do do a version which is, either that or I was too busy telling someone how to do it at the shop that I wasn't really paying attention!

There you go - the sign of a good Magician; working away like a Trojan totally regardless, and in complete oblivion, of the props & tackle being used. Well done!

Dan's website is youdomagic.com (check out http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic3741.p ... youdomagic ) so you might find something there.

It's on one of his Anywhere, Anytime Magic set of three DVD's

Dan Turcotte's You Do magic

or it can be bought as a separate download from Here for $10

Just out of interest, as well as Cardtoon 1 and 2, there is also the farttoon version designed I am sure for the british 'toilet sense of humour. (actually it does go down really well with kids for some unknown reason)

I love that you can do it more than once.

Also there is a dvd by dan harlan and michael maxwell that you can get for aroun £12 explaining how to get the most out of cad toon and toony angle which is the same thing with a different animation.
Has any one got this if so could you post a review

I've just noticed most of this forum is written by the old forum. Why do you reply to your own questions, make comments on your own reviews ect.

In fact, only a small proportion of the threads are from the old forum now.

THe idea of adding to reviews etc. is to share experience over time. It's common to write a review of something that you've only just bought when the item is only just out of the box. However, as time passes your opinion may change and it's useful to others to be able to find out why this is.

Hope that answers your question
