They may have become obvious
to you during the performance because you are a magician and therefore think like one when watching performances. If you saw a magician spread the deck in their hands you may be thinking to yourself 'ok, is he about to cull the spectators card, does he need to put the card to the top/bottom, has he caught a break there, was that a pass when he squared the deck...' etc. The lay person doesn't think any of that. They think their card is in the middle of the 'pack', there being no way he could know what it is and certainly no way of finding it again now he's closed the pack again.
Sankey tends to use some quite standard sleights and misdirection but don't think that they are necessarily obvious to the lay person.
