Tommy coopers table

Postby devilstick Peat » Sep 14th, '10, 19:01

i remember seeing tommy cooper come on stage carrying a table. as he walked on the front legs fell off. he looked worried, then two comedy human legs flipped down to replace them.
any one know where i can buy such a table?

you can pick up a jack hughes legs table now and again if you know where to look.but a warning. They are very, very expensive, as they are almost all 1950's originals.

I would not recommend that you use this in the streets. they are quite delicate, and will not last long.

Supreme also put out a version in the 80s or so (in fact I think Tommy Cooper used a Supreme one) - might be some of them floating around slightly more cheaply?

I'm fairly sure you can get a similar type thing built into a chair, the legs are attached via electro-magnets, and are fine when the magi moves the chair, but fall of when a spectator does. Something like that wouldn't be too hard to put together.

phil's talking about a clatter, or breakaway stool. Again, its something supreme carried.

this, is not supreme... the supreme was basically a box.

Comedy Legs Table

Postby Allen Tipton » Sep 16th, '10, 20:41

I think it was first used on the Halls by Arthur Dowler in the 50's.
Later he was in partnership with Jack Huighes & Harry Stanley--leading to the Unique Magic Studios.

If you can borrow a copy of The World of Jack Hughes, Volume 3, by Derek Lever, you will find it on pages 83 to 85. One page of description and 2 of illustrations showing the mechanism.

Derek used to manufacture it so you could always try him.

I have permission off Derek Lever to build these tables. If you are at the IBM convention next week come along to my stand and you can try one.

David.
