Bob and Royal Toad both started out as books years ago and that's probably the best way to go. There are DVD versions - check our Reviews Section or the Search Function to find more detail. If you have a local magic shop then try and support them by buying from there, if not Google for the best deal!

I have not read every post here, but I have no problem with exposure on youtube, I do not feel it harms us in any way, and I will not be signing the petition.
The only exposure I have a problem with is revealing the intellectual property of someone else. Beyond that I have no issues.
Sometimes exposure can be the best thing. The fact that the whole world knows David Blaine used a camera trick for his levitation keeps us all honest.

I'm with Tony, though for a slightly different reason. Trying to get Youtube to put the clamp down on exposure videos is unfair. I hate exposure videos, I was very disappointed when I did a really nice trick last night and after I told people I wasn't going to show them how I did it, someone announced that that was fine, they'd just google it.

That said, it's a violation of people's rights to ban something like that. Even if you mean well doing it, it's simply not okay as a policy.
Imagine if other groups tried to do the same thing: video game proponents trying to get interviews between Oprah and Jack Thompson off the air, Mothers against violent videogames trying to get game trailers taken down. And you, of course say, "It's different."

No, it isn't. You're trying to shut down videos because they hurt our art, they'd be trying to shut down videos because they hurt their cause. What makes us special and where do you draw the line.

TL;DR violation of rights.

If you want to stop people googling your tricks, then invent your own plots, do not give them names that can be googled, etc. Their hardly going to google injog+undercut overhand shuffle, followed by DL, and then erdnase colour change

I just googled that and ended up spending 3 hours on a very questionable dutch website

I may have been born yesterday but I stayed up all night.

The government imposes a double standard on the matter. If it is illegal to give away music for free, why is it legal to give away magic secrets!?!?!?!?!

C'mon,- some snotty nosed kid in his bedroom getting his moment of fame by exposing what some of us have paid good money for? Can they not be educated in the finer art of keeping the secret to themselves?

The biggest culprits seem to be actual 'grown-ups' (well physically anyway) who think it's cool to blow the gaff on other guys' efforts to entertain.

Would they spoil a comedian's gag by shouting out the tag line before he delivewrs it? Probably.

Signing this petition seems to be the closest thing to a hecler stopper for magicians . . . put my name down.

Exposure is not the problem except concerning greedy dealers who sell our secrets to the public with not even a peep out of most magicians. Seems as long as a price is put on exposure it's ok?

Be that as it may, what hurts magic more is poor performances. When the lay sees a so called magician perform badly, they assume our craft is worthless, or something for just children who aren't smart enough to catch the mistakes. This hurts all magicians even the top pros. How often have I been asked, "so what do you do for a living?" and when I respond I'm a magician or mentalist their response is,"no your real job". Now of course that's from people who have not seen me perform, but the point is the same.

If we want to protect so called secrets, we need as magicians of old did, and keep them to ourselves. Stop trying to make a buck with every idea or variation and release only those things we either no longer use or are ok being known. Today information is instantaneous and there's no way to stop it. Not with petitions, laws, whining or whatever. We have to be big boys and girls and understand that things have changed and to be actualized, we have to change to.

So add my names to the petition for no petition, as that's the only one I'll sign.

I think the idea is that most layman not interested in performing magic wouldn't spend the money on something just to learn the method.

I'd much rather go out of business than hold a hypocrtical double standard about the rights to freedom of speech.

Plus the fact being encouraged to constantly reinvent the wheel is never a bad thing. It's natural selection in the professional world; those who can succeed those who can't get a new job.

I agree with you, but Guy Hollingworth made a post on BBC about how any tricks should be exposed to keep the magic alive. True, some tricks are overpriced but it annoys me when people expose tricks on YouTube that they cant even perform themselves.

No disrespect to you but however many signitures you get, you cannot stop exposure on YouTube, as long as it is the users own audio and video, the Copyright Inringment Laws say the videos can stay (There is no law against it as long as the video is theirs)
