The "I hate David Copperfield" Trick

Postby its_tim » Aug 17th, '10, 11:47

The Effect
3 cards are shown. 2 red backed and one blue backed. The blue card is placed on bottom, then visually jumps into the center of the two red cards. In the second phase, the blue card visually rubs through from the bottom into the middle. Then after being squared up it jumps back to the bottom.

Cost
£17.99 on http://www.magicshop.co.uk/p2810/I_Hate ... _info.html

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
1 very easy to do even with a small sleight.

Review
Its very simple to learn and takes a few minutes to master. The gimmick needs to be made from cards you already have. Geoff Williams teaches the trick well and adds his own part of the routine on to the original Larry Jennings "The Close-Up Illusion". The effect is highly visual and the gimmick is very well hidden. However it is not an examinable effect.

So?

Are you showing only to registered inspectors? Why do you feel you have to give your cards out after each effect you show? I don't! If you have to give your cards or props out after each trick you show, you are doing something wrong!

thanks for the review.

Can we stop with this pointless bashing of people for wanting to hand out props for examination, post performance. That's their choice to sate any cynical members of the audience, which thanks to the internet age there are plenty to go round. IF the topic is brought up "do you think it better to hand out props or not?" than yes, by all means chime in with your two cents, but if someone is just posting their opinion in the review section, (a section intended to be of help and use to the community) and the first thing you do is bash them for sharing their opinion, well don't be surprised if you see them not want to share in the future.

Arkesus, if you feel you have to hand out cards or props, then you – as a performer, are not in charge of your audience. People that demand to see cards of props are called hecklers.

I just find it awful to downgrade a review just because you can't hand out the props. It's wrong.

No, if a person feels they have to do anything, than they are a human being and an individual.

... and if a spectator says: Show this to me again! ... you oblige and show it again and again?

No, but I am not here in this thread to discuss performance techniques, I posted in an attempt to get this thread back on track. An attempt that sadly is wasted as you insist on continuing to lambash and confront.

I have answered your question and see no need for you to ask another here, so do the adult thing and leave the review section to it's intended purpose, (reviews) and continue your opinion posting in the general areas that require it.

I havent performed it to an audience, however some of my friends were impressed and confused by it. As it only uses 3 cards and is very visual it can be used in impromptu situations

This does look great. I saw Geoff perform it at Ron's Day last year, but I think the price is pretty high for this. It's included on one of his Magic for Mortals DVDs (sorry can't remember which one) and you get loads of more tricks as well.

Geoff has a good knack of reinterpreting some classic works and I can't recommend his stuff highly enough.

Yeah it is quite pricey and could be a lot cheaper if it came as printed instructions. These would be just as easy to follow. For the price it would be worth including the gimmick

It's on the miracles for mortals DVD set as well as a lot more so in comparrison the £17.99 is on the expensive side.

Nice trick but also not my style.....

As for handing props out, whether you do or don't, in general terms it can be important for some performers to know. I have some propos that I always hand out as it gives me the misdirection that I need for a sneaky change of something large. It's not so much the item that's handed out but the movement in handing it out but none the less, once you've offered the prop the eyes of the audience are then exactly where you want them.

Anyway - back on topic

Can anyone tell me what the difference between this and Larry Jennings close up illusion are?

Very little difference.

I think Geoff has altered one of the phases to make the penetration look better.

Agree with dat8962, its a pretty decent effect, but I think £18 is a little steep!

For the extra £7 you might as well get his his DVD - along with 9 other effects...
