Trilogy

Postby Tom Lauten » May 28th, '05, 10:21

Trilogy Due in at the end of June 2005

http://www.alakazam.co.uk/acatalog/Hot_ ... html#a1216

Price: £29.99

Difficulty: 1-2/5

They say:

3 Times The Effect 100 Times The Impact

You name a random card, spectator one picks a random number. Next you name a second random card and a second spectator picks a different number. Finally, YOU name a number and spectator three names ANY CARD he likes. Get this, you ALWAYS choose first ! We bet you can see where this is going and are already thinking how the...!

OK - here goes: You open the card case and remove the deck. You freely show that all 52 cards have different numbers on them. You remove the card spectator number 3 named and place it face up on their hand. You now turn the deck over and remove the cards bearing the numbers spectators one and two named. When you flip over the first two you have an exact match card/numbers! The third card is still face up, Remember, spectator three had a free choice of ANY card. It couldn't possibly be, could it? The spectator turns it over - it's the exact number you named !!! All three spectators are left holding the exact card/number match that they picked!

How clean is TRILOGY? Well, there are NO sleights or cosy handling of any kind. There are NO forces, NO one-ahead and NO sticky cards.

I say:

How true!!!

I have had the opportunity to evaluate this effect ahead of its release and what a lucky-puppy I am. If you want my copy you will have to pry it from my cold, dead (but still sexy) fingers!!

I actually can't say much more than the advertisement. I does what it says on the tin.

Overall:
A modern classic.

These aren't Bikes but given the nature of the cards (a written on deck) there is no point, you won't (wouldn't) be using them for any other effects.

The spectators can freely handle their selections.

It is easy to do, if you can walk home from the bus stop you can handle this one.

This effect will fry the minds of lay people and it will throw off magicians if that is important to you.

The price seems on the high side for a deck effect but you REALLY get what you pay for...mark my words!

Rating: 9.5/10

Oooooo, I loves my Trilogy!

Saw this and was pretty certain I'd have to order it. The pretty has now gone.

I agree with Tom, the trick is an absolute belter.

It is so fair and easy to follow from the punters point of view!

Cheers

Well I've ordered mine and I totally blame you Tom, I've spent way too much this month and you just made me spend more.

Sounds good but is it really as good as it sounds!! can the 3rd spec really pick 'any' card? you dont need to force a specific colour or something do you? and when you name the first 2 cards are they the same each time you do the trick,,,

As with all tricks there are limitations...obviously it isn't real magic, we all know this.

Given that... Trilogy plays out exactly (for the spectator) as it reads in the description. No dodgy moves. All selections are done before you even show them the deck. Upon taking it out you simply display the cards as described and the trick unfolds.

The first two spectators can genuinely pick 'any' numbers and the 3rd spec can genuinely pick ANY card.

Repeatability is something one has to seriously consider including (or not) in one's performances...is it a deal breaker or not. If I were doing close proximity strolling, I wouldn't instantly pocket Trilogy as my first choice...it's not really that kind of effect.

There is no forcing. There is 'management' but this is so natural it doesn't even factor in and it doesn't even take thinking about.

I thought there may be at least a small apology for playing on the vunrabilities of CUPS, knowing there are quite a few of us struggling in this area. I can almost see the horns on your pic. ( no special effects required )

Yeah I can't wait, only problem I can see is that I suspect it will stop me from being able to perform one of my favourites as I'm pretty sure it will be the same kind of deck and is a bit too similar. The word for those in the know is Lucy. Of course I may be right of track.

Lucy is the better version of the effect Phil. I was thinking the same!

I knew I had to have this when I saw Tom's review. A few days later I was at the Top Secret Magic Day in Milton Keynes and watched Peter Nardi demonstrate this twice in front of me without a clue of how it was done.

Just to re-inforce what has already been said about the effect this trick has, I performed this for the first time to some mates in the pub a few days ago and the reactions I got were very strong indeed. They were completely baffled, and well impressed.

Its not cheap at £30 but IMHO its easy to perform, difficult for the spec to guess the method and has a high impact, making it excellent value for a trick thats going to stay on my 'A' list for some time to come.
