Behold, Pareidolia!

Postby Tomo » Jan 20th, '12, 11:05

I was classifying surface features on the Moon last night as part of the Zooniverse Project when I spotted this little chap looking back at me. What better way to demonstrate the concept of pareidolia (seeing faces and other significant objects in random patterns). Click to see a larger version.

What is also fascinating is that, as far as I understand, that's a crater, while it looks like a relief...

Yes indeed. It's a crater with the light coming from just north of west. The light ejecta shows that it's fairly new.

I was also classifying star data with the Planethunter project last night and seem to have co-discovered an eclipsing binary pair called APH51057428. The two stars spin around each other with a period of 3.016 days.

That crater face is very "Mars sphynx".

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

This one? It's very similar, isn't it, except the Mars one is a rock.

Super photos. Are there any photos showing the sites of the Apollo Moon landings? The notion that they were all filmed either in the Nevada desert or on a secret CIA film set in Los Angeles is still put forward regularly, a few site photos (which I know can be faked but what the heck!) might be a way to silence a few of the louder proponents of the 'we never actually went there' camp.

Yes, if you find any space hardware there's a category for tagging it. I've not found any yet, but then again, there are literally millions of photos to plough through and the Moon's a very big place!
