Bike Deck Life Span

Postby mm_112358 » Jun 15th, '05, 19:11

Hi Troops,

I realise this is probably a very dumb question, but im sure a few hobbyists like myself have found themselves in a similar situation, so the question is when do you know its time to ditch your tatty deck for a new one - i understand that through time and practice this will become easy to tell after a while, at current i am practicing about 4-5 hours a day and have been using the same deck for a few months now ( i have 11 in reserve  ) but for practice im kinda loathed to waste a new deck just to drop it everywhere, while i do realise it will have to happen cause practicing DL's etc is now near impossible with my old reds ( could i use this as a guage if or not DL's are possible).

Cheers Yours Stoopidly :?:

When my cards get to that "maybe I should use a new deck" stage. You know when some are bent and the edges are black rather than white ! Then I use these for routines where the cards will be destroyed.
Torn and restored effects.
Card Warp.
Linking cards etc
If I have a few decks that have seen better days then I pass one on to my more than willing kids to practice with.

If you have so many in reserve then I suggest that you treat yourself and open up a new deck.

Go on be a devil !

I disagree, wait until you've had a bad day and tyhen open a new pack!!

Or, wait untill you got someone to impress, the open a new pack.

That's what i do!!

One of them usually comes around in time!!

i open a new deck, when the one i am using is well un usable for some effects, also when i open a new deck also depends on when i can afford a new deck.

My Bikes seem not to last for very long at all - mebbe 1 week at most then they start to become sticky. Of course, I still use them once they're sticky :D. I have a new deck just waiting for a good moment...

My decks also seem to get very sticky very quickly. When the stickyness starts to effect my tricks too much, thats when i exchange for a new pack.

I practise about 7 hours a day...
I use a new deck every week, and 2-3 new decks per show. after one week, even though they still fan perfect ect I just ditch them.

It is much nicer to always have a presh pack and it is also good to get used to using a pack fresh out of the box. This has many advantages as you will find when working all the time.

I met a guy just over a month ago at my local magic club and he had the most tatty looking deck of Bikes that I've ever seen. They must be quite an old design of Bikes as all of the faces have a border printed around them and I haven't seen this before.

Anyway, what he could do with this deck of cards defied belief and I've NEVER seen anyone handle a deck, in the flesh like he did. I was truly gob smacked, just couldn't spot any of his sleights. I saw him again this week with the very same deck and it made me rethink whether I'm throwing my decks away too soon and wasting money.

Maybe he used fanning powder or he used some sort of smoothing powder? It might make the deck feel as good as new!

As for me, I don't use Bikes anymore. I use good old Tally Ho's! Although my practice deck is getting very worn in and very sticky. I can't fan properly etc.

No, these cards were untreated and he is just exceptionally skilled.

I have a few decks, actually. I have a couple of Bikes and a Waddingtons, which are a bit tatty but I use them for practice. Then I have my good old Tally-Hos and Bees, which are perfect for showing tricks as they're just right for fanning. And finally, if I'm working on really big thumb fans or other showoffy things then I use the new bike deck, which is still really slippery and great for that.
