hi im new to the forum

hi my names tony and im new, ive been practicing magic as a hobby since i had my first magic kit at 8, (it was the paul daniels one), i also learnt a few card tricks here and there too as a kid but didnt really think of doing it as a career until about 4 years ago when i worked in a pub and one of the customers was a card manipulator and could do techniques id seen but never tried to learn some realy basic things too. i started having lessons and learning different tricks and false shuffles as my employment circumstances changed ive been practicing alot even bought some new effects from online dealers as opposed to just updating my hobby magic from toy shop kits and was just wondering if 33 was too old to try and make a career now or should i just stick to doing it as a hobby any advice would be appreciated. thank you all.

Indeed, i have a friend who does this full time and he started when he was forty. I changed from full-time magic into full-time paranormal entertainment just over 2 years ago, so it is never too late. Welcome to Talk Magic.

Welcome to TalkMagic!

Magic is one of those rare passions that you can never learn too early, *or* too late; if you're bitten by the bug, and have the motivation, you can take it as far as you want, irrespective of age.

Your Magical journey starts...Here! :D

Hello Tony, & welcome to TalkMagic,

You will find all the help, & advice you need here.
These guys have been really good with me, & nothing is ever too much trouble.

I got into magic about 18mths ago now, & more seriously into card magic just over a year ago, I'm 53, & although
I will never turn pro, that's not stopping me from doing some wonderful tricks for family, & friends, & just about anyone who wants to watch.

It doesn't bother me about getting paid, I have all the money I need. I did a bit of table hopping at a local Indian Restaurant last Saturday night.
Got a free curry for me, & the wife, & got the owner to donate £50 to the local children's hospital. I loved every minute of it.

Your never too old to do owt mate :D

Welcome aboard.

Hello Tony,

I love close up, I think it's a real skill, an art form.
I also have a couple of non card routine's which I have become pretty good at.

"Holy Moley" (J Sankey) "A Charming Chinese Challenge" (Troy Hooser)
& my new favourite, which I now carry every where is.
"Strike 2" (Lee Smith) This is such an easy make it up as you go along routine, & you can have such a laugh with it.

A little routine I am putting together for the coming weekend is as follows.

Produce the 4 Ace's using a John Guastaferro trick "Colour Blind"
Followed by "Palm Reader".
Put the deck away, & do another Guastaferro trick "Fairy Tale Frogs" One of my favourite Pkt tricks.
Switch the decks, & do "Snowball Aces" This is a lovely routine, & knocks em dead.
Follow this with "Strike 2" So much fun with this one, this is a very clever routine by Lee Smith, quickly becoming one
of my favourite performers.
Back out with a straight deck, & do my new routine, another Lee Smith invention "Business Lunch"
I think leaving them with a signed business card in there hands is gonna knock em dead.

I read through Lee Smith's Lecture notes on presentation this week, found them to be very helpful.
Having said that, I have worked with the public for many years, & I have always been pretty quick witted.
Age I think can be an advantage, in that we have more experience in handling people in the right sort of way.
This coupled with the fact that my nerves are starting to settle down (shaking hands)
I'm loving every minute of it.

I'll stop rabbiting now :D

sounds good carl hope the routine goes well, im currently working on a routine that has a good mix of card and other parlor effects mixed in with a mind reading card trick which seems to be a crowd pleaser when i show it to people. also an effect i used to use in the pub i used to run was called card warping i think some call it card melting but ive confused many people with it and the clean up is just perfect.
