If you buy a song from iTunes, copy it to a CD, give the CD away and then delete the original file, is this still copyright infringement/illegal?

Yes and it is illegal to burn a purchased CD to itunes, they expect you to buy the digital copy. Crazy but true, i do hear that they planned to adjust that law.

So the only way to legally give away a song is to buy a single version of it and give that away?
This is both crazy and a pain in the proverbial.

I'm working on an idea where I give the participant the CD as a keepsake. I have the workings cracked but I can't infringe copyright everytime I perform it!

How about using copyright free music or a tune which you can buy outright for a small sum? Much the same as giving out a signed playing card, bottle of bubbly or other memento of the occasion because those also cost money. Are you able to deduct such costs from tax or at least include them in the fee you charge? Just some thoughts!
