Gerti - by Romanos, Magic Tao

Postby bananafish » Feb 22nd, '12, 14:04

I haven't reviewed anything for awhile, but I am just back from Blackpool and I feel compelled to share a real gems with you.

Dealer: Magic Tao
Cost: £10

The Effect

This is the classsic coin in hand plot. Effectively you have two coins, one is signed one is not and you always know which coin the spectator has.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
1=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review
To start with let me say I love the plot. I like to start all mentalism acts with a simple 50/50 effect as I believe it lends itself to establishing credibility for the later effects that get more and more incredible as I go on.

So the plot is nothing new, and one I have several very expensive methods of achieving, however this one is pure genius and a joy to perform. I simply love it. No electronics or magnets (I suspected magnets and when I was told it dodnt use them I had my doubts but I can assure you the claim is correct). It is also a fraction of the price of the many of the alternatives out there and yet bizzarely can be argued that it is even more surefire to perform. What is not to like.

So what is wrong with it?

Well nothing really. There were several other effects discussed on the DVD, but the coin in hand one is the only one I can see myself performing as the others I felt wheren't as strong. Having said that there are other ideas that could easily used with it. The principle is quite honestly a pure joy. I am still smiling about it.

After thought
I have just looked at their website and dont see the product isnt there yet so I assume it was new for Blackpool - It is also possible that the £10 price may also have been a Blackpool special offer. This wouldnt surprise me as as far as I am concernded the secret for this one is worth far far far more than £10. In fact (now I have one) I think they should put the price up to protect the secret! It should be double if not triple what it is.

Nice one Romanaos

Overall
10 out of 10.

ps. It is also not mentioned yet on the Magic Tao password protected forum that allows its products to be discussed in detail - but I assume that will come soon too, as it will be nice to share new ideas.

Costas very kindly gives me a bit of a heads up on new releases, and as ive had nothing from him on this item It may be a blackpool special.. It does sound good. Romanos has a knack of comming up with some very practical stuff.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

After watching the video, I didn't think it looked all that good and I'm normally cups crazy. I don't know how it's done but there is an obvious answer in the eye of the spectator. Whatever the method, the fact that the magician holds one would I think lead most people to suspect that the coins feel slightly different. I could achieve this in seconds. Or am I missing something?

Great review bananafish. Thanks

DJBenz, can you really perform this in seconds and be correct 100% of the time?. Put it this way, this even fooled Garret Thomas.

I, nor Karma (above) I suspect, didn't mean perform in seconds, but create a gimmick in seconds that would allow it to be performed. But given the names of the people it fooled, maybe I'm thinking about it too simply...

Only one way to find out... give in to CUPS. :D

DJBenz. Like with everything we see in magic, we can come up with a way to achieve it. It doesn't make the trick any less good. Send me a PM with the method you would use to create this. Ill be honest with my responce. If you get it right, ill send you one. You have one chance lol

I only bought this at the weekend and so haven't performed it professionally yet, but I will. I would be happy to perform this as part of a close up mentalism set, a parlour set or indeed just as an impromptu piece.

Whenever I was at the stand I was watching it being performed a lot, and no one suspected anything. When the coins were handed to me to sign I had no reason to suspect they werent anything but 2 10ps- and I was watching Romanaos (Who demmed it) like a hawk (as I suspected one of the would be magnetic - but this is definitely not what a real spectator would do) As soon as it was in his hand he held it out to one side. It looked extremely clean.

Yes it is true that the magician needs to hold one coin, but this isnt a problem for me, I am happy to work this into the patter - after all, the magician has one the spectator has one and I don't forsee this as being an issue. All focus is on the patter which for me will be based around being able to see involuntary body reactions, a subject that I know fascinates people. With it being just a 50/50 effect I don't believe the coin will ever come under suspicion, but even so I don't think a spectaor looking will notice anything. Of course I haven't performed it yet to back that statement up but I wouldnt risk losing credibility for my entire act if I felt this was a risk.

If you have watched the trailer and you feel it isn't for you I have no issues with that, performing mentalism is a very personal thing and we all have to have confidence in the effects we use. There are definitely other methds out there were the spectator can hold a single coin, or if you really wish where you can do it for real.

For me though I stand by my review and love the fact that it can be perfomred so impromptuly (if that is even a word).

It's not out of the question, but ITV will need to increase the budget to buy all the tickets to Vegas.

Anyway, order placed, I'll wait to have my curiosity satiated.
