Hello from a beginner!

Postby Ranald » Jul 19th, '12, 21:48

Hi there!

A couple of months ago, I decided out of the blue that I would like to learn some magic tricks, for the sole reason of impressing family and friends. I learnt my first couple of basic tricks and got really hooked on it.

Within a couple of weeks, I had bought several packs of Bicycle playing cards, and had a couple of books on the way: Joshua Jay's Complete Course in Magic; Joshua Jay's Amazing Book of Cards and The Royal Road to Card Magic (I must point out, I am not a fan of this book as it is far too 'wordy' for my liking. I much prefer learning tricks from colour images and video.

Several months in, I am still really enjoying the hobby. I have learnt some more tricks and (very) basic flourishes. While I am not a fan of the mathematical card tricks, or counting cards into piles or anything, I have not attempted to learn any proper sleights, as I simply do not have the time to practice. My current two favourite tricks are 'Do as I do' and 'Ashes on the arm'. It is this style of card magic, where little skill is required for an impressive looking trick that I am really into. I am currently working on a Svengali deck routine and the use of the ID.

I am really looking forward to exploring the depths of the forum and learning as much as I can from it.

Many thanks and all the best,

Ranald.

Hey there, welcome to the forum! Its a great place to find all the support you may need when you run into problems. As for magic, you couldnt have picked a better hobby. Be careful not to try and rush through a book otherwise key facts and tips can be misunderstood, especially in a book such as royal road where the language is quite wordy (however this book is definately THE book for begginers once you get used to the style of writing and the language used). ONE MORE THING! Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the kind words!

I was just wondering which section of the forum would be the best place to ask about a Svengali routine? Sorry, I haven't quite figured my way around yet!

Many thanks,

Ranald

Support and Tips would probably be best.

Even though Royal Road is a bit dated nowadays, especially in terms of the patter suggestions ('Will you assist me, sir? I must make two conditions, however - first, that you will not at any time name your card or give me any indication that I have discovered it; second, that when you cut the cards, as I shall instruct you, you will say to yourself, 'This I cannot fail to do.' That, of course, is an application of the principles of Dr. Coue, the eminent...' Blah blah blah etc. etc. etc. ) it still has lots of great stuff in that, with a bit of thought, can quite readily be adapted to a modern audience. So be sure to give it some attention nevertheless!
