Drawing Room Deceptions

Postby DomanC » Mon Nov 06, 2006 12:50 am

I bought Hollingworth’s book Drawing Room Deceptions last year after I had seen him on WGM3 (I think) and it startled me. When I bought it they told me it would be difficult, but I know a snap change, double lifts, miracle change, Hermann pass, half pass would do it, it didn't! When I began reading it it was extremely difficult, but that’s why I think I like it so much, it challenges me when I read it and perform. The book is excellent and contains some great trick such as:

Cassandra Quandray: An amazing trick in which a selected card is put in a sealed un-gimmicked envelope, then the spectator by a process of elimination eliminates 50 cards from the pack leaving one, (the other one in the envelope makes 52) the one left would be impossible for it to be in the envelope, BUT IT IS, the sealed signed envelope is opened and there is no card in there! Talk about a paradox!
waving the aces: you saw it on TV!

Reformation: torn and restored card, I think the best one ever, and hardest one ever! you saw it on TV!

Oil and Water: red separates from black in a packet of six cards, audience sees the altered colors and instantly the are black separated from red! Fascinating!

Moving on if you buy the book the two videos are a must! The videos are London Collection, and Routines. They are great videos different from any magic video you've seen, the videos teach the real hard tricks in the books (not all, some are waving the aces, Casandra Quandray, Ambidextrous interchange, etc.) to simplify the understanding. PRICE: $20.00-$25.00 each video

Quartet: This card gaff is fantastic, simplifies routines, makes the original twisting the aces by Dai Vernon easier, you don't even have to do an Elmsley Count! It also simplifies Hollingsworth’s waving the aces, and it changes the kings to aces in both waving/twisting the aces. It comes with 10 tricks and one card gaff, great trick. PRICE $20.00

Reformation Videotape: It’s out of print but a friend of mine gave it to me, if you don't have it try to get your hands on it! The filming quality on it is crappy, but a good learning source to learn the reformation, if you want to learn how its done buy his book Drawing Room Deceptions, reformation video tape and the book are the only ways it teaches how to do the fascinating torn and restored card trick. PRICE: out of print.

Everything listed is recommended for advanced card magicians.

Anyone know where I can get this in the UK? The internet is just turning up American shops.

Nice review, you should really use the template next time though.

I have struggled with this book many a time and must admit that i don't perform any of the routines. This is simply because I use other methods to achieve the same effect.

I did enjoy reading it and would love to see the man perform.

It is indeed a brilliant book. Nothing is unachievable, just like The Devils Picture Book. You just to practise a hell of a lot! I really like the Voodoo Card Trick in the Intro.

Thinking about getting this..... even just for the reformation piece.

How advanced is the stuff contained within the book......about the same level as the devils picture book, more...less?

Advanced. There is very little that won't take lots of work. A few things, but mostly will require a hell of a lot of practice.

Ok thanks, Lenoir.

The voodoo card trick, I hear great things about that, is that another difficult one or is that a bit easier?

I just commented on this book in another thread. It's not beginner material at all. Personally though it's one of my favourite magic books not only for the content but for the read. I think it's a must have for ever card conjurer's book shelf.

I agree completely with the above post by hds02115. One of my favorites too. I love the methods as well as Guy's performing style. The effects defiantly aren't for the faint hearted though. I remember buying this book and skimming through it first time around, reading a little of a trick, getting to a point at which I just couldn't get my head, or hands for that matter around it and so giving up and moving onto the next. It was only after going back to it a year or more later, that's right, year or more that I started to really understand how much of a gem I had hold of. One day this book will be out of print and sorely sort after.

Just putting my oar in. These effects are very advanced (Mr. Hollingworth is kind enough to warn us of this in the promo material) However just as others have stated this is a lovely read. It's very inspiring and even if you never perform a single effect from this book I honestly believe the ideas and inspiration, the passion of the writing will make you a better magician. I am lucky enough to have an old VHS of "The London Collection" but am glad to say Guy Hollingworth confirmed he is re-releasing this as a DVD at this ears EMC.
